  • About four weeks ago I got really pissed off with WST because I put up an article from a local newspaper and one of their employees decided to make a subtle modification (because of copyright issues) which I considered a personal insult because of what I have done for this forum in keeping it alive. They could have sent me a private email and told me that they had NEW RULES. So I stopped posting for two weeks.

But I have my own PERSONAL MISSION on this forum and I rose above my vexation. I can go set up my own website any time I want and mix my politics with the PAN TING and TAKE DOWN Keith Diaz and DOLLY and ROWLEY in SIX MONTHS. GUARANTEED!!! (That is why I laugh at people like GREGORY LINDSAY and AQUIL ARRINDELL and their LIMITED POLITICAL SKILLS against THE RIGHT HONOURABLE KEITH DIAZ!!!)

So, in a way, I am glad that ANN BAILEY came and PUT SOME LICKS ON THE FORUM even if on nebulous grounds.

In the end I say: EVERYBODY PIMPING THE PAN!!! And I will never deviate from that opinion until I see SOMEBODY make a decent PAN CD that could get some INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION. That is my mission although I know that the MUSICAL TALENT and ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS ARE GROSSLY LACKING.

But we all HAVE DREAMS FOR PAN!!!

  • Merrytones: In the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NFL: Ah eh talking about soccer) brutal hits and violent ghetto aggression is THE NORM. But every so often a referee will throw a flag for UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS. Ah feel like you and me tackling ANN from both sides at the same time is UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS.

Let us give THE LADY a little break now because (ultimately) she is promoting STEELBAND in AMERICA by writing about it. And as they say up here: ALL PRESS IS GOOD PRESS!!!

  • WST...you can't be serious!!

    • Look at me and MERRYTONES on the SAME PAGE!!! Ah love it!!!

  • I have such issues with the "copyright nonsense" -- is this passage below original?

"In early 20th Century Trinidad, slaves of the Spanish and French used music as a form of expression and communication. It was around this time that it was discovered that dents in steel produce distinct musical tones, and from that discovery, steel drums were born. African rhythms derived from slave music would soon be heard from the new instruments. It wouldn’t be until the 1940’s and 50’s that the instrument would be refined with deliberate tuning and precise construction."

Ain't nobody bothering nobody for STEALING THOSE LINES!!!

However precisely embellished they may be -- even to my liking.
    • Hi, I am the author of this content.

Are you suggesting that I did not write this myself? It's news-style prose, so it is written formally. I can assure you that it is my own. I have actually received honors for this particular piece of writing.

Typically, I do not interact with public response to my journalism as I feel it is unprofessional. However, it is important to me that it is understood that I would never plagiarize. In fact, when I first got into journalism, I did a broadcast segment on it! It is laughably rudimentary, but nevertheless, it is my own content.

In order to prove that this is my own content, here is the broadcast video I did along with this article. I appear in the video.

Lastly, I am happy for people to repost my content! I just don't want it to be altered from its original form (and I want to be credited, which I am thrilled was done here). My original article included all perspectives, but this repost only includes that of the band.

      Best wishes.

      • Ann: I took issue with a VERY SPECIFIC PASSAGE from you article. Which I copied and posted. And just to let you know that I have read hundreds (if not thousands) of summaries about the BIRTH OF THE STEELBAND and yours was "THE BEST EVER" that I have read because for decades I have been looking for a concise introduction to the topic -- especially this line: "It was around this time that it was discovered that dents in steel produce distinct musical tones, and from that discovery, steel drums were born."

So much so that if I ever decided to write a book on the history of PAN I would STEAL that line and let you sue me. But it is just a RESTATEMENT!!! I am not accusing you of PLAGIARISM!!! That is a knee-jerk response on your part. I know that it is YOUR OWN CONTENT. And I do understand your journalistic integrity and ALL THAT STUFF. And I understand your broader journalistic perspective.
But I always tell the POSTERS from TRINIDAD on this forum that TRINIDADIANS can't come to TEXAS and say that they have OIL because TEXAS has more oil than TRINIDAD. And TRINIDADIANS cannot come to CUBA and say that we have SUGAR because CUBA has more SUGAR than TRINIDAD. And by the same token, YOU CANNOT write an ORIGINAL SUMMARY about the BIRTH OF PAN on TRINIDAD without COPYING reports that you have read in BOOKS and MAGAZINES. Just like SHANNON DUDLEY and STEPHEN STEUMPFLE wrote their books on the HISTORY OF PAN (which became best sellers) above all the authentic sources who witnessed the development of the instrument.

The rest of your argument about PAN in small town America is irrelevant to me. Because my personal agenda is the production of MARKETABLE STEELDRUM MUSIC which the NATIVES down there seem incapable of producing.

And I do understand that you do not want to be misunderstood and you want all perspectives included. But this forum is a horse of a little different colour.

I know that you wrote the article!!! I know that it is YOUR OWN. That in not the point of my response!!!

      • Your first two sentences are woefully incorrect…please do more research...

        • Good evening,

This is the information that was provided to me by interviewees with the steel drums department, which I then later verified online.

Perhaps the confusion is in the phrasing. I am not suggesting that slaves created steel drums, but rather inspired steel drum musicians with their style. You'll notice I used the words "It was around this time that it was discovered that dents in steel produce distinct musical tones...", meaning that these cultural trademarks were occurring almost simultaneously. However, that does not indicate that slaves directly contributed to the creation of the instrument. They were instead influencers of the music style that would soon emerge. I hope this clears up any confusion.

If this is not correct, I would be happy to review more sources and even alter my original article! It is incredibly important to me to only report what is true.

          Best.
