A poster who comes to the forum only once in a while, but always makes some very provocative postings, asked this question yesterday. The only issue I have with his question is that he said "everyone" and I want to make it clear to him that I am not on that LIST,.

  • I wonder WHY everybody is ALWAYS blaming ME because it eh have NO PAN ON THE ROAD ROLLING ON THE GROUND for CARNIVAL? I am from the school of thought that says: EVERY GENERATION is ENTITLED to its own MUSICAL CHOICES.

And since I despise "LISTING" (especially in CALYPSO), I am not going to write a whole LONG LIST to validate my position.

    • mi amigo, this the collateral consequences, when you associates yourself with UBIQUITOUS IDIOTS, on this FORUM who don't know anything, and who don't wanna know anything, if you ask them how and when Carnival started, they don't know, if you ask them how and when "PAN" started they CANNOT TELL YOU, and if they do try to tell you anything it's always what someone told them, and you know WHAT There say, here say evidence is INADMISSIBLE IN A COURT OF LAW, do you remember what I always say, WE ONLY KNOW WHAT WE KNOW, and they haven't been where you or I've been so they won't know, that is Y I'm not saying much on this forum anymore...

  • patrick, we can't tap-in to our own Local market but people talking about the Global market, master the one in front yuh face first then go outside. Everything has gotten  more difficult for the local bands because the Steelband is not a novelty as it once was, they are all over the world today.

  • Today, PAN is a GLOBAL MOVEMENT -- constantly growing, constantly changing. Yes, It started in Trinidad riding on the back of Carnival and then it left the shores in 1951 to go to ENGLAND. And from that stage it started its GLOBAL JOURNEY. Thank god for the INTERNET, anyone can spend 5 minutes reading and they will discover how far it has spread and how much ENERGY it gathers as it goes from continent to continent.

PAN ON THE ROAD FOR CARNIVAL is the most inconsequential aspect of PAN as it relates to TRINIDAD and TOBAGO and the PAN WORLD today. What is most important is for SOME PAN ORGANIZATION in Trinidad to make itself relevant on the GLOBAL PAN STAGE. The BIG 5 woke up and made a move in that direction after they saw KEITH DIAZ make his attempt and fail in New York. But without the input of EXPATS the BIG 5 will remain a NATIONAL STEELBAND FOUNDATION.

In much the same way EXPATS like to sit down in FOREIGN and think that they could WRITE SOMETHING on a FORUM and suddenly NEXT CARNIVAL 150 bands will appear on the streets for carnival -- the BIG 5 has the reverse problem. Because you wake up one morning and call yourself "INTERNATIONAL" that does not make you INTERNATIONAL.

THE PAN MOVEMENT in ENGLAND is light years ahead in the GLOBAL PAN GAME. If the NEW YORK PAN MEN could understand the picture, they could be leaders in the game WAY ABOVE THE BIG 5.

AMERICA is the MECCA of PAN right now -- not in LABEL but in FUNCTION. All TRINIDAD really has is the HISTORICAL RECORD and the DIPLOMATIC CAPITAL -- and that's quite a lot if the BIG 5 can figure out how to INTERNATIONALIZE it. But again I repeat: They cannot do it without the help of EXPATS.

Now Glenroy Joseph is NOT ON MY LIST. Because he has been a GREAT CONTRIBUTOR to PAN for DECADES. But to all the other PAN ON THE ROADERS -- start thinking about what you CAN DO FOR PAN TODAY. And forget all this talk about bringing PAN BACK ON THE ROAD like it used to be in the SIXTIES -- DAT EH HAPPENING!!!

    • Well, maybe some way to contact the thousands who will fly in for the Trinidad and Tobago carnival 2018, find out from them through an online questionnaire about their interest in the steel-band during the carnival season.

      • Now yuh talking, MR. PARTICK. But you will have to have a REAL MINISTER OF CULTURE for that -- NO DOLLY HOUSE!!!

  • I don't have to listen to those that say "dem days done" as long as there is Carnival there is a place for the steelband, that's as good as money in the bank, they just have to get people with the desire to make it happen.

    • Cecil I admire your way of thinking on the subject - carnival and steel-band.

  • There are people who is hell bent on bad mouthin pan on the road  as if it beneficial to them in  some way, anyone who fail to understand why T&T has to promote the steelband as part of the carnival package don't care about culture. At one time they promoted T&T as the land of Steelband and Calypso, the rest of the world still see us like this and is disappointed when they come to carnival and don't see the steelband, What attract foreigners to the steelband is the vibe they get, they love the dancing and parting in the streets. Today it is suppressed during  carnival but they try to duplicate it 4-5 times during the year, I won't even try to understand that. They blame the youth for the situation today, what ah crock, everybody knows that youths will adapt to what ever program is running, so the ball is in the hands of the powers that be. Money is the best incentive to bringing bands on the road, a group comparable to the Big5 will have no problem finding sponsors for this project.

  • Well since ALL STARS got the FORMULA for rolling pan on the ground on both Carnival Monday and Tuesday -- they should share it with another 100+ bands and CARNIVAL will suddenly be LIKE IT WAS back in the FIFTIES and SIXTIES with STEELBANDS on the ROAD in every village, town and city.

Make sure allyuh bring back SUNLAND STEELBAND from Tunapuna. Ah want to go back to the good old days again jumping up in ah STEELBAND with DALGO and MASTIFAY and JOE DOG and RED KEN and the rest ah the PUMP BOYS.

But just make sure that on ASH WEDNESDAY morning allyuh could bring me "BACK TO THE FUTURE" because ah have to feed meh two little dogs!!!
