Carnival Plan being revised

Trinidad Newsday

THE National Carnival Commission’s (NCC) Strategic Plan for Carnival is being revised. Community Development, Culture and the Arts Minister, Dr Nyan Gadsby- Dolly, made this disclosure in a written response to a question from Princes Town MP Barry Padarath, which was laid in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

In her response, the minister noted that the NCC is the body responsible for the conduct of all Carnival activities under the aegis of the Government an in collaboration with key partners in the industry.

She said while the NCC has an existing strategic plan for 2013 to 2017, the recommendations of that plan are being revised for the 2017/2018 fiscal year.

“The long term plan for the Carnival industry remains the objective as identified in the NCC Act: to make Carnival a viable, national, cultural and commercial enterprise,” Gadsby-Dolly stated.

  • Who is looking after standards in the Carnival product? While 2019 plans should be in draft form during this year, 2018 should be massaged and checked for confirmation and security of its parts,
Viewers at home, on the net, or TV had a difficult time knowing what was being presented as the bands crossed the stage. Announcers discussed mainly their own agendas, and the descriptive process of the parade of bands was nearly zilch. Banners were not legible. (imagine words painted in glitter). I suggest the Bureau of Standards be brought in to provide a standards manual for the mechanics of this show, to serve as a check list before delivery. Every production has unnecessary glitches, so that it was easy for Dimanche Gras which traditionally has been the crescendo, to become a bore. However, we simply endorse it was a great Carnival, and we jammin still. Can we look forward to the sort of managerial plunge into critical analysis to.explore a reality aiming to transform its gross weaknesses, to make everyone concerned and involved proud with confidence that it is truly "the greatest" national festival..
When will the Carnival Theatre be constructed! Ah tired dodging around uprights that stand in the view of the stage!
    Amen.

    • Ayesha: Every time I read your postings, I can feel your sincere passion and love for the culture. I can also feel your pain. I just don't understand the lack of ADMINISTRATIVE SKILLS when there is such an abundance of educated people crisscrossing the land.

Well, I do understand it ... but that is a long and complicated story. Similar to them untangling the incompetence and getting the "GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH" to be THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH!!!

      • Thank you Claude for your perceptiveness! My mother used to call me "culture-vulture" plus I was fortunate to teach at tertiary level, Caribbean Cultural Studies both at home and in Canada. However, I am beginning to lose hope in managerial development of my sis and bros of TT. One of the things that  pops up in my  critique is the inability to produce properly is due more to nepotism and less to a proper selection of people with knowledge, critical skills and who are fired with an appetite for excellent production.   A friend use to say he cant stand the Trinis "it-good-so", attitude to things, which suggests the continuous audience's acceptance of the shoddy, which has made the producers much less interested in criticism and transformation. Hope we can "chat" more and relieve ourselves of the pressure, however, ah jammin still!

        • "A friend use to say he cant stand the Trinis "it-good-so", attitude to things"...

          Oh gorm sister....fuh real eh?...

          • merrytones, the "Ultra VIP" people sinking the country.

  • I am afraid the NCC is not doing a good job because Carnival seem to be going from bad to worst.

    • Apart from there being no Dimanche Gras, what else went wrong?
