THE Calypso Monarch competition will be held on Carnival Thursday and not the traditional Dimanche Gras Sunday night.
This was disclosed yesterday by recently appointed chairman of the National Carnival Commission (NCC) Allison Demas, as she announced several sweeping changes to next year's Carnival schedule of events.
The competition to determine the winner of the "most prestigious title" in the "calypso world" will have to compete with Tribe Ignite and several all inclusive fetes, including Headley and Beach House, on February 7...
Pan Trinbago will also hold a steelband competition, "Groovy Soca Monday Night", which will be held on Carnival Monday in the country's four regions. "Each competing steelband must play a groovy soca tune for adjudication in this competition," Demas said.

Anyone reading my posts over the years would know that I've been an advocate for moving the panorama to later in the year as a month long festival in celebration of pan, allowing the steelbands to find other productive ways to participate in, and profit from the Carnival.(Hopefully a more powerful presence on the road, Carnival pan theatres, dances etc)
One of my main reasons for this is my belief that there is too much activity compressed in too short a time, especially when we have a relatively short Carnival season, as will be the case next year.
This is obviously the reason for the changes being made.
Moving the panorama to a later time of year will give the pan some breathing space, and allow a longer buildup to Panorama, thereby guaranteeing more pan activity for most of the year.
It would also reduce the competition for time and locations during the short Carnival season, and give the other Carnival activties more space to grow and profit.
Glenroy the critical question is where do the majority of people who currently attend panorama reside?

If it's happening on Thursday and not Sunday then the package name should be changed from Dimanche Gras to Juedi Gras!!
Dimanche Gras is still on Sunday night but the Calypso Monarch has been moved to Thursday so it's no longer part of Dimanche Gras neither is the King and Queens of the bands competition which is now on Friday night. Dimanche Gras is now a non competitive showcase presumably with the winners of Calypso, Soca, Kings, Queens and Pan in attendance

Dimanche Gras on a Thursday? Reminds me of Sparrow's Drunk and Disorderly: "Ash Wednesday could come on a Friday, as long as is rum day, that's all right with me, as long as ah...."
