Crellin community builds steel band for school

by Mary Sincell McEwen A&E Editor

CRELLIN — One week of hard work by Crellin Elementary School students, faculty and parents has resulted in the construction of no fewer than 19 steel drums, now to be used at the school by music students led by teacher Heather Roth. The efforts at the school were guided by Kevin Martin, of Rock Creek Steel Drums, who had visited the school in January for a workshop and decided he’d like to come back for this ambitious project.

“I have been to schools all across Maryland, and Crellin is one of my very favorite by far,” Martin said. “The kids are so engaged, the teachers are involved and happy here, and the leadership is exemplary. It’s a great school.”

An educator with Young Artists/Arts for Learning of Baltimore, Martin travels across the state and beyond, teaching students how to play the steel drum. He also operates a steel drum factory in Ocean City.
