Desperadoes Steel Orchestra is on the move again. On Monday members of the steelband moved onto the former grounds of the Government Printery at the corner of Victoria Avenue and Tragarete Road, Port of Spain.

The band’s assistant manager Martin Caine said, “We moved in on Monday morning to inspect the grounds before we started cleaning. Most of the pan racks are already on location on a paved area on the eastern end. It will take some doing to get the site ready, but we will be going all out.”

Caine said since the band left Frederick Street earlier this year, it had been at Jerningham Avenue in Belmont, on the grounds of the former Ideal High School. On Frederick Street it had been using the site of the demolished Greyfriars Church.

  • Very good spot....not too far from The Savannah.....just right for all life long supporters of Despers to visit and feel safe, as well as within close proximity of everything happening in CARNIVAL....Great is Despers...long live Despers and we WILL be CHAMPS again in 2018....ZANDA.....DO YOUR THING.

    • Not getting tie up Bro, I'm happy for Despers, I'm just having fun, where is your sense of humor ?

      • My question to some bands in Trinidad most bands should try and locate an area to purchase and call theirs and no one can put them out.

      • You call dat having fun, Cecil?

Making joke bout Lapeyrouse cemetery, where people dying to get in and those inside cyah get out?

        Not me an' you, nah!

Anyway, looks like a great location for both the band and the pan-loving public.

Best of luck to Despers in their new 'house'.

  • Despers at one end of the cemetery and Silver Stars at the other end, no Rest in Peace for the dead.

    • Whatever happened to moving back up the hill? I thought they were headed back up after last Panorama

    • Yuh wrong my friend...We...Despers.... will bring peace to the dead with our music.....DOH GET TIE UP!!!!

  • With all the talk about panorama and money , the trend of steelbands in T&T struggling to find practice locations and support within their communities is most disturbing , and represent a weakening of the bonds between steelbands and their community base .

It also undermines the positive social and cultural role that modern steelbands can play in those communities.

    • I agree with you. This is only a temporary solution. Is the crime situation on the hill preventing them from using the facilities there?

I agree with you. This must be a temporary arrangement. Is the crime situation on the hill preventing them from returning there? Imagine, "PAN", the jewel of T&T, looking for a place to rest its head. So Sad.

  • This sounds like something out of the Brooklyn pan community where the question every summer isn't "what is band X playing", it's "where is band X's yard this summer"?

Hopefully after the work they put into cleaning out this space they can hold on to it as a more permanent seasonal yard. I thought the space they had on Frederick was really great, too bad that didn't last.
