DuBose steel drums program releases CD

A year-long, project-based learning unit at DuBose Middle School has landed more than 100 students on iTunes.

DuBose’s steel drum program has successfully released a CD, titled “Momentum,” that is now for sale on a number of online platforms.

Mike Greer, who teaches the steel drums class at the school, said the CD is a project that started with last year’s eighth-grade class. Greer coined the idea and said the ultimate goal in a project-based learning unit is public display of one’s work.

As a musician, “this is the most public you can get,” he said.

The nine-track CD is available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, YouTube Music and other sites. The CD was officially released on May 18. Greer said he has since checked Spotify analytics and said the album has been streamed in Brazil multiple times, as well as Chile, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Denmark.

Last year’s eighth grade students did the tracking for the CD’s title track and when the students returned for the 2016-2017 school year the new seventh- and eighth-graders did scratch tracks and also got involved in fundraising – Greer said students sold Tidal Wave car wash coupons and Yankee Candles for funds.
