  • I enjoyed the other CALYPSOS put up in response to this song -- I love them all. But PUMP ME UP WITH THE MUSIC brings a unique creativity to the SOCA. First of all, Edwin's voice is so perfectly suited to this song: He does not over sing; he does not under sing; and he does not strain to hit the notes. But the arrangement of the music takes the cake. NO HORNS are used in the song. Instead, we have background vocals doing all the work. Typically, Calypsonians make very stringent use of background vocals because they (the calypsonians) so want the limelight. This entire song is quilted with background vocals.

And then we get to the use of the hook ("Pump me up") which is repeated 42 times in the song and you still don't feel that you have heard it enough times. But what creates more drama in the production is the use of a second hook (sort of a bridge on steroids) which is used so smoothly 10 times in the song by the background vocalists: "If the Vibes feeling right ...."

And we still have the "Play the music" chants coming in 9 times with about three more by Edwin. Lord have mercy, how many times you want to hook me in one song? I would sure like to shake that arranger's hand.

Now, to top it all off, that guitar strum used to introduce the song still have ALL MEH NERVES JUST AH JUMPING.

    • All true and to the point, but I used to hang with many of the Bajan bands in the 80's and 90's in Bim and many of them (2nd Ave, Square One, Coalition, Crossfire/Krosfyah) in rehearsal used to go crazy when I would put on this cassette tape...  The soca drove them wild...

I have one more, but I have to dig deep to find it and it real good... ;-)

      • SING IN SHE PARTY is one of my favorite calypsos of all time. What stands out so much about it (among many things) is that the HORN delivers a HOOK LINE and that is pretty genius!!!

        • The horn lines were done by Tony Estrada (used to play horn in Scout's Band with my departed brother Wayne) and Colin Lucas...  Both Colin and Earl Edwards lived in my neighbourhood in St. James...  Used to frequent under Colin's house when the bad would do practice and marvel at Colin's arrangement skills...  The tune 'm looking for is Carl & Carol's Fix It UP, but as covered by Fire Flight with a wicked arrangement and Steve Sealey vocals will impress...  If someone has it, please link us up...

And yes, I am an e-pan supporter and helped guide and mentor Salo is his quest.  Remarkable youn talent that has a lot more to come in store...

      • Andre: I always see you as E-PAN MAN!!! But your are a passionate SOCA LOVER too. Like ah meet meh match, boy!!!

  • A great choice Claude. Here is a concussion for you.

  • A few come to mind in terms of Groovy Soca, starting with this...

And of course, this timeless classic which started it all...

    • Andre: Yuh giving me THUNDER!!!

  • I call this sound classic soca calypso , with more of a balance between lyrics and music , unlike pure soca , which is all about rhythm and tempo  with dominant vocals.

To be honest , for an old timer like me ,these sounds are pleasing to the ear ,and the vibration reminds us the traditional sounds of T&T music to which  we've become accustomed ,over the decades.

    Sweet calypso music !
