IS IT POSSIBLE?

Is it possible that we produce to much music in T&T? Every year our performers come out with their CDs while in other parts of the world they do it every 3-4 years. Does it have a negative or possitive impact on the industry?

  • I think if a performer do only two songs for the season they make just as much money as if they had done a full CD. Now if they take 6 songs and release 2 every 4 months they stand to make more money.

  • There are a lot of market forces interplaying here, but it boils down to how good you are.

Panaz albums, both cd and dvd are always in short supply every where since I could not get one in Trinidad

and not even at the airport .

This also happens with Phase 11, All Stars and Despers.

Maybe some good marketing agents will help but they are so expensive.

Can't the bands develop their own.Give them some courses and it should pay off.

  • Especially since most of the music is targeted for the "carnival Season" .So we have all this music focused on a period that could last as little as two months, competing for air play and dollars.

    Ridiculous!

    • Glenroy, this might not all be true since all the Carnivals in the Caribbean and all around the world usually play most of the Trini music. I am not sure if Royalties come back to the owners though. There may be positives for all the music composed every year if the Royalties return to Trini. Here is where the professional marketing and collection of Royalties come in.

      • I was speaking to a very popular Artiste recently and he was saying that it is possible to make a good living on royalties alone from local music played outside of Trini more so than inside, but it must be well managed and structured. So I guess that all the Trini music created every year could be a positive to the Artiste and the country as a whole depending on how it is Marketed. The same I believe, could be said for our Carnival which includes the STEELBANDS. Why must Steelband CDs be in short supply?

        • Bertel wah carnival yuh talking bout one 3 steelbands come on the road.

          • Any Carnival, one with 3 Steelbands would be a good start Cecil.

            • Agreed but ah kindah feelin ashame seeing we supposed to be the land of the steelband.

  • Good Question for some serious market research......

  • Hi Cecil ,if the artistes in Trinidad can produce a cd every year , all power to them I certainly can't afford to do it . In Canada it costs at least( $5000 for a professional studio cd . I have 4 CDs , the first in 2002 and the last in 2006 , I have no plans to do another cd , you just about break even unless you are one of the more well known artistes . With all the duplicating and downloading these days in my opinion CDs are n ot worth producing anymore especially for the lesser known artistes . I am in Trinidad right now and i listen to a few gospel stations here and most of the. Music I hear are foreign music , No local content. Or music from Trinis abroad . If your music is not heard it will not be sold . Some of you may disagree with me and that is ok as this is my opinion ohly. Blessings Winston .
