Itunes finally recognizes Calypso, Soca as genres

iTunes recognises calypso and soca as formal genres

 In what is a major breakthrough towards the recognition of both calypso and soca as genres in the international music market, US-based iTunes Music Store, a division of Apple Inc, has announced that both art forms have been designated as official musical categories on its Internet marketplace.

  • Yes they are important but they cannot define us or our culture. I think they wanted to be sure they were not left behind.

    • This is big and it's going to get bigger, hope Pan Trinbago take note. I recall a few nights ago on MSNBC Ed Schultz show there was the sound of (synthesize) pan music accompanying a political news story.

      Apple TV has a set-top box with a built-in You-tube channel. If you enjoy watching you-tube videos on your TV this is the direction technology is moving, I use my DVD player with internet connection to play youtube music videos in a home theater environment.

      "Alvin Daniell said that the iTunes recognition—calypso and soca now appear with approximately three-dozen other genres under the heading of “World” music—will help usher in a new era of opportunity for calypso and soca artistes throughout the Caribbean and the diaspora. “It impacts all aspects of the income generated by our artistes,” he noted. “We firmly believe that with the new listings it will be easier to source our works and that will lead to increased income and recognition for our artistes.”
