Komani, South Africa - Let’s Play: The Marimba and Steelpan band festival, hosted by Queen’s College Junior on Thursday evening, was a roaring success. Bands that performed were from Theodore Herzl and Lawson Brown High Schools, both from Port Elizabeth, Kingsridge Girls’ School from King William’s Town and both Queen’s College Senior and Queen’s College Junior. • Wonderful! Reminds me of my teaching tenure in Botswana from 1999 to 2007. Where I not only prepared Mis Universe 1999, Umpole Kwalagobe, to play my country, Trinidad & Tobago's National Instrument, - The STEELPAN - in preparing her for the competition in Port of Spain.

I was the first person to merge the steelpans with the marimbas which was a hit not only within the schools but also at national events in Gabarone and the surrounding districts. I also reintroduced stiltwalking to Southern Africa as only the older folks knew anything about Mokojumbies ... after founding the Kaisokah Mokojumbies in Trinidad I extended the branch to Botswana. SOS Children's Village in Tlokweng were also benefactors to this.

  • Yay! Great to see that pan is so alive in South Africa - my home. Go Kingsridge Girls' School !!! xx
