Monarch School - San Diego

Big up to this San Diego school.... just saw a piece on CNN about them; they offer a special program: "School For the Homeless"  - which gives homeless kids a place to not only go to school, but have community involvement and care....

Their program includes a steel band... they interviewed some of the kids, and showed them hanging their pans and playing... one lil gal said she LOVES the steelband and it's really helped her feel better about life...

So HUGE ups to these educators who recognize the value of music, and PAN!, on children's well-being!

(i cannot find the video clip on cnn.com, but have seen them run this piece several times today so far)

  • I was the steel band instructor there at the Monarch school for nearly 13 years from the beginning, I taught hundreds of kids to play Pan. In my twelve year and after many set backs from 2006 on I finally resigned. The school hired an after school program contractor. The after school program contractor streamlined all the activities and as a result left me with no choice. It was a sad day when I had to leave, it was a big part of my life!

"Monarch is dedicated to ending the cycle of homelessness through education . . . one child at a time.  Monarch School and its committed team of teachers, administrators and volunteers is dedicated to providing homeless and at-risk children with an accredited education while caring for their basic needs. Today, more than 160 kids between the ages of 4 and 19 are enrolled at Monarch School.

    The Steel Drum Band
In early 1999, Monarch staff handed Monarch students interested in learning how to play steel drums their first instrument: A sledgehammer. Those early recruits were required to build their own instruments! This level of dedication to their craft has remained a tradition of the Steel Monarchs, whose popularity, talent and penchant for practicing have built a reputation for professionalism. The band’s high-profile success has extended to their being hired for public performances and special events, and has provided opportunities for more than 30 current and former participants of the steel drum band program. If you’d like to hire the Steel Monarchs for your next big event, please contact an after school program staff member"
