A Detroit dad who left church after playing in the band at a Christmas Eve service was on the way to bring gifts to his three children when he was killed and his SUV was stolen during a carjacking.

Anthony Tolson, who played bass and had toured with top acts like Ne-Yo, Young Jeezy and Kelis, was headed over to his mother's house to celebrate the holiday with his daughter and two sons.

Tolson never made it to see Amber, 13, Aaron, 12, and William, seven, after two assailants told the 33-year-old to step out of his Chevrolet Trailblazer and shot him dead around 9.30pm, the Detroit Free Press reported.
