  • only time i ever got to experience pushing pan was when our truck hitch broke in the middle of the road at brooklyn jouvert a couple years ago... the crowd gleefully jumped right in around us and and started pushing we racks, it was G R E A T !!! a much smoother ride and SO MUCH MORE FUN with evrybody jumping and dancing down the road - the feeling of 'community' was so much stronger with people pushing.....

all the guys in my band always talk about those days before everyone went down the road using trucks, they have stories fuh days. i wish i coulda been around in those times.... it's so much better than being towed behind a vehicle
    • I really enjoyed Jouvay with Phase II, I am sad that no-one pushes the racks any more, but very glad that I jumped up and did it even if it was only the once. I'd still like to know exactly when it all changed, though!
      • Ah the days of pushing pans, Heaven for the budding panist. It meant you were close enough to grasp your chance when the big boys got tired.

You only had to learn 2 or 3 tunes and as soon as the band stopped to change tunes the older one's would see the longing in your eyes and give you a chance to play, In those days we used to say beat pan. I even saw a picture of me in Starlift circa 1965/66 on the internet pushing pan. I'm so glad that picture did not make the press else my Grand parents would have gone ape. Ha Ha!!

Like the time my G Ma's cousin saw me on TV pushing pan in the rain on Semi final sunday when I should have been in church. So the news got back before I sneaked back home to Barataria. Father forgive them for they know not what they do. I had to be very good for a week else there would have been no carnival for me.
  • Human locomotion was a critical part of the steeband culture. The bond between the people and the bands was very special.
  • society in general is becoming lazy..
look at notting hill carnival, steelbands have sound systems on the road with them. so they don't play all day.
for me pushing a band or just 1 man with a 4pan on a float is carnival.
bring back the ole time days.. well not that far but you get the drift
