Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -

Soca artiste Machel Montano was this morning found guilty of five criminal offences.

Montano was found guilty on four charges of assault against Gerard Bowrin, Brandis Browne, Janelle Lee Chee and Russell Pollonais. The charges arose out of a fracas outside the Zen nightclub in Port of Spain in April 2007. Montano was also found guilty of using obscene language during the same incident.

....Also charged with Montano were Kernel Roberts, Joel "Zan" Fezeck and Rodney "Benjai" LeBlanc.

Roberts, son of legendary Calypso icon Lord Kitchener and composer of several of Montano's hit songs, was also found guilty on two charges of assault.

....Magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor, presiding in the Port of Spain Seventh Court, this morning delivered her decision to a packed courtroom, which included Montano's mother and several members of his entourage.

The matter has been adjourned to January 17, 2013.

Montano and Roberts remain out on bail pending the sentencing.

  • I empathize with victims and perpetrators, but justice must be equitable.  If I beat up someone just so, I would expect a severe sentence. Being a celebrity does not mean you can assault people!  Sentence must be appropriate for offence.

    • The judge will thread between the lines. GUILTY AS CHARGED ... but ZERO PUNISHMENT. That way both classes of society will be victorious. I thought it was supposed to be about JUSTICE ... but this is T&T.

      • Allyuh know Machel is Kamla boi, doh make she have to fire the judge take him and go eat ah food and drink ah puncheon, yuh know how she like food......lol

  • What about the victims? Don't forget them. Remember Ravi B's "inciting" incident? Well I'm waiting with baited breath because after five years I can wait one more month to experience the legal system at work in T&T.

  • I commiserate with you Machel as some of your fans have made you a victim of your popularity and success. Then too as an African Trinbagonian celebrity it is typical of your tribe to insist and howl for your jailing because you are not above the law. Mind you such strong sentiments are never expressed by the other ethnic groups like the Indians, Chinese and Syrians. They protect their people and this to a large extent makes them so successful while the African Trinbagonians remain the major occupiers of the jails, the mad house and the pavements. That’s how friends and families treat them and that’s where they want to keep them. So those Machel-hating people in Trinbago continue to be the most self-righteous , full of integrity and always complaining  people in the world. Keep howling for the jailing of one of your most talented and successful young African trinbagonian entertainers. With that attitude of the universality and brotherhood of man that only you seem to subscribe to, you will always be what you are right now in Trinidad and Tobago because unlike the other ethnic groups you don't like your own people and your own self. Power to you , Machel!
