Steel Doin’ It, a local steel drum band, will make a return appearance at the downtown Holland Street Performer Series 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16.

Each week during the series, musicians, jugglers, aerial acrobats, face painters, break dancers, magicians, caricature artists, balloon twisters and more entertain shoppers and diners along Eighth Street. The series is free to attend, but tipping the performers is encouraged.

The 2018 Street Performer Series is sponsored by Gentex Corporation.

The nine members of Steel Doin’ It met 16 years ago at a Muskegon Community College class. They had so much fun learning to play the steel drums together that they decided to form a band. They are based in the Grand Haven and Spring Lake areas and perform at graduation parties, fundraisers, churches, senior living facilities and music in the park events through the summer. The band performs traditional “island” music as well as more recognizable popular hits.

“The sound of a steel drum is such a happy sound and reminds people of a tropical location,” said band member Karen Cotton. “We have fun practicing, and it is truly rewarding to make music with our friends. We love it when we can share the relaxing sound of steel drums with others.”

The Street Performer Series is supported by the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs through the Holland Area Arts Council.
