Steelband Foundation revived to make pan profitable

A new steel band body is insisting that it has no intention of competing with Pan Trinbago, the governing body for the national instrument.

The founding members of the International Steelband Foundation, on Wednesday, told the media that they are different from the steel band body which primarily oversees competitions.

“Pan Trinbago is in the business of staging Panorama and whatever else Pan Trinbago does. We are looking at developing the commercial aspects of the steel pan as an industry so you find we will stage a festival not a competition. We will not be in the business of organising competitions or representing steel bands like Pan Trinbago,” said Michael Marcano of BpTT Renegades.

Though no one from Pan Trinbago was present at the media launch, Mohammed said former Pan Trinbago President Patrick Arnold was advised about the Foundation and a lot of the executive were present for the formation of the company.

“Some of the things we have to work out is the capitalization of the company and our projects. We have to determine the long-term, medium–term and short-term projects that we have to do. So even in terms of bringing other bands into the Foundation, the mechanics have to be worked out, we have to determine ownership and how to deal with that aspect of it, whether we can or should remain as a Non-Profit company That is one of the reasons we brought on consultants,” said Marcano.

  • odw, I KNOW that you ain't believing that B.S., what do these people think a FESTIVAL IS ??? it is to compete into, enter into rivalry, it is also a celebration after victory, these so-call academic bullshiters/scholars, actually think WE PAN PEOPLE ARE FOOL'S HMM ??? a competition is when bands perform/compete against each other, panoramas, festivals, jou'vet bomb competitions, best beating bans etc etc etc, in my book "The ORACLE", in the Preface there's a paragraph that discloses what these people agenda's are, the steel drum musical instrument is a "trillion" dollar industry, a metal hallway lined with pimps and thieves, waiting to steal the money, while "Great pan man, tuners" live like dogs in poverty, waiting to die without food and shelter, as their family's perish and dismantle, while the pimps and thieves run off with all the MONEY, the PT, CIP, ISF, the-y'all gonna do the same DAMN thing ...

    • JJJ, I know you have legitimate concerns and can understand why, but you have to give them the benefit of doubt...

Formed in 2010 with assistance by late attorney Theodore Guerra, the ISF is a non-profit organization and its mission statement includes providing research and development to materials and acoustics and development of new pan tuners; providing advice on the marketing internationally of the players, the instrument and the music; to organize youth programs in steelbands and to promote musical literacy among players; to access funding from International Funding Agencies; to produce, promote and stage concerts, festivals and other events; to manufacture and sell steelpan instruments including a chroming facility; and, to organize training courses, seminars, workshops on aspects of the steelpan industry.

Consultant advisors to the ISF are Martin Daly SC, Terrence Farrell, Ingrid Lashley, Professor Brian Copeland, Hollick Rajkumar and Dennis Ramdeen.

      • odw, like I said prior, we at SNSE saw this coming 52 years ago after the 1965 panorama, where our last Win was the 1966 Music Festival, where Williams later defunct the band in 1972, I spoke to him from Boston, and the President of Pan Am Airways" Stanley Washburn", whom I knew since 1962 and whom I met in NY for the Ed Sullivan Show, Macy's Day Parade and Carnegie Hall gig, where I took the Pan Am sponsorship, to  win the first Boston Carnival  panorama 1972, with "Drunk and Disorderly", Pan Am North Stars Phase II, so I've seen these organizations come and go, they all have the same agenda, nothing never ever gets done, I've been playing the steel pan musical instruments for 63 years, I started at age 9 years old, and professionally at 11 with "Five Graves to CAIRO" in 1956 and 1957, and St James North Stars from 1958, and I've seen almost every thing, so man don't hold your breath with these guy's, what's gone is gone, and never the twain shall meet, Carnival and the Steel band is still here but, the evolution of the steel pan musical instrument is in "A COMA" , a long deep sleep, say and think what ever you want, because that is your RIGHT OF FREE WILL, just think of this, over 90% percent of species that ever lived on this planet are gone, and will never return or, ever returning, so enjoy what we have now my friend, when we go, we're never going to come back, everything that comes has TO GO, where as, today was the tomorrow you worried about yesterday... ...

        • JJJ: Plenty men with lesser participation in PAN than you write all kinda book all over the world about PAN. You should really organize your notes and memories and get that book completed. Yuh playing PAN since 1954 -- man I hope you have a lot of notes.

      • odw: Ah read the whole article and I eh see JJJ name nowhere in the legal battle. Is the G-PAN even still in production? The G-PAN was all about POLITICAL PATRONAGE. But then again, everything about PAN is really a GOVERNMENT HANDOUT.

The ISF as a successful COMMERCIAL ENTITY is LONG SHOT. Although I am sure that I could help them but for the arrogance.

        • mi amigo, my name don't t have to be there, as long as Williams is, I was his assistant, the "big tenor pan idea" it was my own from 1964, where Williams completed it while I was away on tour with BWIA West Side Symphony in 1968, when I came back I consorted with him before I left for "Stockholm and Germany" , in 1969, and it was I who Copyrighted the "big tenor and the Mega pan" you see on my "Portfolio photo, in the US in November 1999 through the Library of Congress Washington D.C.and, July 06 2003 thru "Invent Tech" and, NO ONE, especially Copeland can reproduce one anymore, and asfore my name it onlyhas to be spelled correctly on the check, and the Copyright Certificate OK...,

  • Claude, yuh still taking on this pan rollin wid pushers ting?? dat is like tellin PTSC tuh bring back tramcar. When Invaders had the Republic day jouvert, bands catch they aunt uncle and nenen tuh get pushers. I saw players stop playing tuh push rack. Pushers were promised and some supporters from our band had to pull pan.Later there were complaints of back injuries, sprain foot and shoulder pain for days after. Let we pardner form a pushers association and assign them to bands with fixed remuneration. Young people eh pushin no rack an ole people sufferin wid arthritis and knee problem. Dah picture wid three women in front wid two playing tenor and the red hat playing a double tenor or second wid a small rack eh saying nutten. What you see with Diatonic is how it will be.

    • Mr. Clarke: I will add the word "TRAMCAR" to my commentary!!! I did see them when I was small but I forgot about them.

    • Gerard, if Invaders study what is the best way to move the pans they'll come up with a plan. Phase ll came up with a plan to move theirs. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO PUSH/PULL PANS. One has to find which method suites them.  However the young people is allyuh make them so, too much of the blame is on them,  who have them like dat?
