  • Cecil it's about time  the Steelband Association become self-sufficient ,and stop depending on the Government to promote/finance it's existence....the Government is already playing it's part!!... what is the Association doing to help themself.?.....peace.

    • Knolly, everybody know what steelbands have to do but without motivation from the governing body it's difficult, they are quite contented to do panorama and collect whatever the can, But if a platform is created for them they will participate, 8-9 hours on the road Carnival Monday with a bomb competition for a million dollars will surely motivate them, you will have to involve the two levels of government, sponsors, bands and supporters to organize it. Other sponsors will jump on this because of who is producing it.

      • The pan players should come up with any plan to do something constructive for the steelband during carnival.  It is one method of reducing their dependency on others to do things for them.  In order to get any part of scarce resources, department managers today in every corporation, law firm etc., have to draft and present a business case to upper management to get whatever they deem necessary for the operation of their department.  Here each steelband can draw from pan players, managers etc., with the requisite experience and nominate those individuals to a “project management team [PM].”  Once the team is assembled, it can draft and review the business case for greater involvement of the steelband in carnival.  Of course, project management will have to refute or advance credible arguments like those presented by Knolly, Sherman [and I too have witnessed the phenomenon of only older folks being in a steelband on the road at j'ouvert, webeat, and pan on the avenue and I also saw one band one j'ouvert morning where the flag waver was the only person in the band who was not playing an instrument.  Thus, I wonder what these phenomena means for a project of this magnitude], Cecil, and Glenroy etc. and provide a cost benefit analysis.  If approved, PM can present the business case to Pan Trinbago or a de jure middle management team.  If, however, there is no de jure middle management team since Pan Trinbago is in crisis, project management may forward and present their recommendation directly to upper management – the Minister of Culture etc.  The time has come for pan people to stop being dependent on others to do their bidding and to find creative ways to fund their bands/players and their initiatives.

      • Cecil, maybe your are on too something!...your idea could be a solution to part of the problem!!..that is what Pantrinbago needs.....solutions...peace!!

  • While I agree with the point of your argument , Cecil , I think the ideas , direction and plans for the future of the steelband will have to come from the steelband community who have the knowhow , are aware of the problems and should have ideas as to what need to be done.

And we will then have to insist on support from the Ministry of Culture , when we as pan people can propose and advance cohesive plans for the future.

Like it or not , pan people will have to do the work.

And that is why the need for enlightened , forward looking leadership is of the highest priority.

The Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly sat down with me to talk about the bachannal in Carnival and Government's plans for the festival.

  •  CECIL, THIS IS YOUR CONTRIBUTION  'QUOTE"....TIME TO DO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE WITH THE STEELBAND FOR CARNIVAL. Minister of Culture,Minister of Tourism in T&T it's about time you take the lead in promoting the National Instrument as part of our National Ffestival......peace!

    • What's your point Bro? You ask me for a list of FESTIVALS, I said Festival and meant Carnival. Did I use ah wrong word?

      • Cecil Hinkson , they do that to me all the time.

They deliberately ignore the point I'm trying to make and focus on one word or expression , to deflect.

That is what politicians and political operatives do.... like Trump's media people

  • Cecil, Please explain,  "Promoting the National Instrument as part of our National  festival".... send me a list of all the National festivals that you are talking about...
