USA and Trinidad and Tobago a win away from the Women's World Cup

PHILADELPHIA – The Trinidad and Tobago women's team arrived in the United States two weeks ago without enough money for lunch. Now they're a win away from going to the Women's World Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago, known as the Soca Princesses, could be the Cinderella story of soccer's premier tournament next year in Canada.

But first they'll need to face Costa Rica on Friday in the semifinal of the CONCACAF Women's Championship. The United States plays Mexico in the other semifinal at PPL Park. The championship and third-place matches are set for Sunday.

T&T forward Kennya Cordner, left, challenges Costa Rican defender Diana Saenz during the semifinal of the Concacaf Women’s Championship on Friday night.

Even with a suspension, several knocks and a fatigued team, head coach Randy Waldrum remains confident that T&T’s senior women’s footballers can defeat Mexico in the Concacaf Women’s Championship third-place playoff today and qualify for next year’s Fifa World Cup. T&T and Mexico will at PPL Park, Chester, Pennsylvania, from 3 pm, before USA and Costa Rica challenge the final, from 6 pm. Waldrum was clearly deflated after T&T’s (3-0) penalty shoot-out loss to Costa Rica in the first semifinal, on Friday night, but in turning his attention to Mexico, he said the players simply need to play with the same spirit and determination and also follow the game plan in order to get the job done.

    • Best of luck to our Soca Princesses.

  • SMH....And allyuh wonder why pan people take so long to get paid.

Not to defend Pan Trinbago, but they have to deal with the same government !

  • No wonder we in the Caribbean are classed as "Third World". Then we get upset

    • Roselyn Greenidge, we are of the notion that the world have to conform to meet our standards when it's the other way around. If you want to  competing  in the real world you have to get real.

  • Ha ha. I hope they get their $50, 000 in less time than the Warriors did (or didn't).

What if they win the whole thing? Will they get more or will they figure that they already got enough?

Way to try and save the embarrassment they were feeling over sending the team up empty handed.

Good old Trinidad. Always jumping on the bandwagon after the band has left the stadium.

    • Wayne Cezair, I ain't reach to the $50,000 yet, ah wonder if these ladies get an allowance for the tour?

  • odw, I find that people that represent the country  always face money problems, it's a sad thing when you enjoy a good lifestyle at home and  you go in foreign to represent and yuh doh know wey yuh next meal coming from.

    • Cecil,

Here's how the LA Times report characterized their situation...

"Although Trinidad and Tobago is one of the wealthiest, most-developed countries in the Caribbean, a number of scandals has left its soccer federation heavily in debt. As a result, the team's trip to the U.S. was delayed three days while the federation searched for enough money to pay for the necessary visas".

      • then when America and the rest of the world use the term "Third World", we get upset
