  • "Pan is an instrument that we’re trying to define as not an instrument, but something special. Anything that has 12 notes is an instrument. And you better learn music because you shouldn’t be playing the pan, you’re playing music..."  Raf Robertson!!!

    • famous people like Jimi Hendricks as his biography mention his
inability to read or write music made him focus better on the music he
heard. The Beatles As told to 'Playboy' in a 1980 interview, John Lennon said, "None
of us could read music," ... "None of us can write it. But as pure musicians,
as inspired humans to make the noise, they are as good as
anybody." (when speaking of Paul and Ringo). Elvis Presley.  The 'King of Rock and Roll', Elvis Aaron Presley, the famous singer to sway
the hearts of millions, did not know the theory of music either. He had an
exceptional voice, which was never formally trained. He played his guitar
relying entirely upon his own sense of music. Listening to the songs of
Hank Snow and Jake Hess. These famous people played the guitar and Music without learning to read Music.

      • Earl: Yuh stop so quick ... ah was still reading!!!! As Andy Kaufmann used to say: Where is the punch? By the way have you seen "Elvis: That's the way it is" -- very good.

Of course, there are always exceptions. How many Beatles and Elvises and Hendrikses there are?

Raf was really talking about the NEW DAY in PAN. Now that the instrument has gone past novelty you have to approach it with some level of musical knowledge (like the YANKEE PLAYERS are doing). Go listen to the video I put up today with Aquil Arrindell explaining the panorama arrangement and you will see how much musical structure there is to the whole process.

Of course, as a CALYPSO LOVER, I don't see the need to bring all that MUSICAL SOPHISTICATION to a PANORAMA SHOW on Carnival Saturday night when people want to hear PAN JAMMING and steelband killing we with all kinda runs and salsa and jazz when man want to hear how good they could play a calypso. But that is a different discussion. Even the BIG 5 show they trying to prove all kinda ting instead of jut playing WE KINDA MUSIC!!!

The MODERN PAN was invented in 1947 by a fellah from TACARIGUA/TUNAPUNA and when the fellahs from town see it -- dey throw away dey biscuit pan and cooking oil pan and run and start looking for the 55 gallon drum.

        • Mi Amigo, I already reiterate that modern pan B. S., Kelvin Morris and Anthony Williams were the 1st two men to tune the 55 gallon steel drum November 1945, after the war ended in May 1945 they called it May Day, so they got the drums at Chagaramas Base, where the Americans use to refuel their PT boats, that is where Movie Town is today in Port of Spain, there was also the 1st Island Wide Steel Band  Musical Festival in September 1946, that Young Sun Valliansfrom St James won with the tune "Home Sweet Home" arranged by "Bajan" Cecil Ward the desinger of the 1st single strumming pan they called the "Strummer" then and tune boom, all was made from the 55 gallon steel drum, the following year 1947 "Casablanca" won that festval, and as for that fellah in Tacarigua/Tunapuna, his pan was made by one"Andrew Beddo" a "Shango Drummer" from Port of Spain, therefore all that biscuit drum talk is pure B.S, the biscuit drum was in 1942 when the war started and during untill 1945 after the war, "Harlem Nightingales was the very 1st steel band to used the 55 gallon drum, then Young Sun Vallians...

  • PAN was a serendipitous discovery on the island of Trinidad in the late NINETEEN FORTIES. Now, some people think that it was sent by the Lord from heaven above to integrate the world with PEACE and LOVE (Sorry Sparrow). But as a great AMERICAN BASED TRINIDAD MUSICIAN one said: If it has TWELVE NOTES, it is a MUSICAL INSTRUMENT and it really ain't got nothing to do with GOD and SPIRITUALITY and COSMIC INTERVENTION and AFRICAN MYSTICISM. And one would expect to hear MUSIC coming from it (if indeed it is a musical instrument) -- NOT A SET OF NOISE!!!

As far as I am concerned it is still a very crude instrument, especially when presented as a STEELBAND!!!

But the world loves the TONALITY!!!

    • The summer of 1936 Mi Amigo and, it IS A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, that is made from an oil drum or container... ...
