AQUIL ARRINDELL WAS PROMOTED. THANKS TO THE STEEL BAND COMMUNITY, MY SUPERVISORS, MY SCHOOLS AND THE MINISTERS IN THE M.O.E.

Research has shown that one in every four boys is born with a reading disability. I am that one in four. Despite having had a reading disability, I have managed to be selected as a District Coordinator in the MMPU, formerly known as the Pan in The Classroom Unit. I always tell people that you can’t define me by my weaknesses because my strengths more than compensate for them. Due to my belief that nothing is impossible, I set goals, time lines and work fervently until they are achieved.

I am thanking firstly, the Minister of Education for not closing down the unit, although the country is faced with a recession. It is often the norm for educational institutions to remove music, dance, drama and other subjects in the arts when money becomes an issue. Our unit is always under threat. However, I must say that key people in the MOE insisted that the MMPU holds great value in the landscape of the nation’s education system. The fact that the Minister of Education is also a practitioner of the arts, we were pleased that his assurances that there were no intentions to close us down were proven as truth.

Next, thanks to the steelpan community, as every part of who I am is because of you all. I learned music for free from Mr. Lennox Fortune in a pan yard. Due to that knowledge, I have been earning my wage for most of my adult life. This is why I am so passionate about the instrument, the industry and music education. I have been doing for others what Lennox Fortune and the pan yard did for me, as I would like youths in my community to have the same opportunities as I did.

My next vote of thanks is to my schools who gave me the opportunity to learn while teaching. I was very fortunate to have a good relationship with the teachers, the staff and my students. I love you all and know that I have not abandoned you but have ascended to a position to which I can help more students experience the positive effects of our national instrument.

I must give my supervisors a special mention. Mr. Auburn Wiltshire and Mr. Dereck Boucaud, both of whom encouraged me to apply for the position. Because of an intention to add more pans to the schools, both Mr. Wiltshire and Mr. Boucaud visited me at La Lune RC. After they observed the lesson and we visited other schools, they jokingly called me the Mayor of Moruga. The positive feedback they were getting about me from the students, teachers and principals was overwhelming. They told me that if I could bring my four schools to that standard, they were confident that I could bring a district to a similar standard.

Finally, I give my thanks to God. I have passed through some real pressures in recent times and every time I thought it couldn’t get worse, I was proven wrong. However, I always knew that blessings were coming. It took a while but I am there now.

To all youths, do not let people speak negativity into your life. Work hard, be generous, help others and God will always provide. Thank you again to all and continue to live in love.

  • Aquil Arrindell: You make sure that you contact Mr. Pierre at the school 624-1688!!!

  • Hi Aquil,

you should no doubt be a member of the next executive committee as you have shown courage and have "cajones" standing up and exposing the corruption.   In my opinion you would make an excellent Education officer or PRO, as you have great communication skills.   In spite of that you still should be supported for the post of Vice President.

I am tempted to say good luck, but you do not need good luck as you appear to be the most popular of all the candidates.  When selected continue to do a good job.

  • Aquil the next stop is Project Coordinator. I am looking for you there in the next three years.

    Blessings from SERRIEAUX
