"Trinidad and Tobago has recorded its first case of community transmission of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

This means the person contracted the infection while in the country.According to a release sent out by the Ministry of Health minutes before a press conference at the Park Street Head Office on Tuesday the person “is a primary contact of an existing recent imported case."

A 36-year-old Brooklyn principal, who was originally from Trinidad, died on Monday evening owing to complications from covid19, according to several US media reports.

Dez-Ann Romain was the principal of Brooklyn Democracy Academy in Brownsville.

  • As of the afternoon of Tuesday, 24th March, 2020 the Ministry reports the following:

    · Number of samples submitted to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for testing for COVID-19 = 353

    · Number of samples which have tested positive = 57

    The Ministry also provides the following update:

    · Four (4) additional persons have tested positive for COVID-19.

    o Case one (1) has a history of recent travel.

    o Case two (2) is known to have had contact with a person with a history of recent travel.

    o Cases three (3) and four (4) are two additional nationals who returned from a cruise but entered the country separately from the group of sixty-eight (68) nationals who returned from the same cruise.
