Pan In the 21st Century 2011 Shelved ..

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -Pan Trinbago has officially notified its membership - and the public - that due to a “fall in sponsorship,” a decision has been taken to shelve this year’s staging of the Pan Down Memory Lane and Pan in the 21st Century competitions customarily held in May.

Pan Trinbago will instead produce a show on June 18th 2011 with some of the past winners of Pan Down Memory Lane and Pan in the 21st Century competitions.

  • Ok, then let's begin to plan for 2012. By then the "sponsors" will have ample time to properly allocate for the events. It's cool like that!

People are dying of heart attacks resulting from stress, and Pan is an artery (no pun intended) to keep us alive!

    How can we help?

  • Dose not Matter Now!

De world ENDED>>>>>>>BYE ah was'nt ah bad, bad sinner. Ah go be in de Basement of Heaven ah go have meh cell..I am sure dat.de man with de Hammer is up on the top Floor.....Peace OUT>>>>>>>..

    • The good book says WORLD WITHOUT END  Amen
      • Seems like only you (Cecil) and I remebered what the 'good book' says -- the Lord's prayer...."World WITHOUT end"...
  • It was bound to happen, when will the pan community really get up and do something for pan. For starters, only when you realise that competitions cannot and will not sustain Pan Trinbago and it's members. I will try and give a simple answer, when Pan Trinbago gets $25M from government most of it goes to the bands, 10% is all that Pan Trinbago gets, this has to pay workers for carnival, office and management staff for the whole year, as the subvention that was given to Pan Trinbago by the Government has been removed some years ago, there may be some other money from some corporate sponsors, and out of that too is used for paying prizes etc. The only way for Pan Trinbago to make money to be able to sustain the organization and it's member bands is to go into the production and sale of steel pan instruments. There is a world wide demand for steel pan instruments, in the region of $100M US annually, how much of that comes to Pan Trinbago? From that industry they can set up small companies ie. different regions can supply, different products e.g. Northern Region and by extension, Northern region bands  can supply pan stands, Eastern Region/bands Pan Cases, South/Central Pan Sticks, Tobago Region Scoring of Panorama Scores etc.Where is the much talked about Chroming factory?

But to me the major obstacle that is hampering Pan Trinbago is the day to day management. What new or innovative thing that has happened in the last 5 years? PTB has got to move into the 21st century with it's management systems, they spent so much money on a scholarship for Mr. Keron Valentine, in International Marketing/Systems, at Akron State University  and what did they do with him? they frustrated him out of the organization. Fortunately, Mr. Valentine did not go in a corner and "mope" he is now the Deputy Mayor of Port of Spain, how many people are aware of this? they played it down, no full page ads, etc. You know what that would have done for the young people in the organization? Mr. Peter Kanhai Manager Solo Harmonites, was recently re-elected President of the Tunapuna Chamber of Commerce, again no word from PTB, why then do you have a Public Relations Officer? They have to get rid of the pettiness that still prevails in the movement. And how come no other corporate sponsor/sponsors has come forward to take up the slack left by B Mobile? Is it a question that they don't trust the organization and it's accounting systems?

But more than that the membership has to wake up and be mindful that the leadership must answer them for all that is happening and get the facts, look in to the accounts and try and get the answers for the reckless spending, how many of them would have noticed that in2010 they PTB paid the producer for all their events a whooping $586,000.00 in stage production fees check pages 20 - 22 - & 24 (check the 2010 AGM reports) My information is that this current president Mr. Diaz is solely responsible for the Minister of Culture reducing players stipend by $200.00, and that the full $1,000.00 was already given to the NCC for Pan Trinbago. That single act would have cost PTB some $1.2M, that is a lot of money to pay for some one's lack of negotiating skills.

Sooner or later the membership will have to do what will soon be happening to Mr. Watson Duke, President of PSA, move a no confidence motion.

    Stay tuned.

  • People are tired of steelband competitions anyway. Steelband have to go back to the future, pan in fete, pan on the radio, pan on a CD. Trini people have to fall in love with steelband music again, watch Panergy in Austria, Calypsociation from France and all over the world people love steelband music but Trini only want steelband for panorama, most our young people would'nt play mas in a steelband. Steelband music cannot be seasonal, Pan in the 21st Century must be "Always"
  • Or, we can just leave things the way they are.
We can keep saying how glorious Panorama is, while the top five or six bands reap most of the benefits of Panorama and move on to their tours, appearances etc., and the less fortunate and smaller bands settle for crumbs and wait for a fairy godmother or the government to "do something for pan".

If nothing else, Val and his friends (and the top bands) will have their "glorious"panorama, and most of the panists.of T&T will have little to show for it.
