Play One for Asami

On February 10, 2016 the local steelpan fraternity (and by extension our global family) were thrown into a state of shock and despair on the discovery of the lifeless body of one of our own Ms. Asami Nagakiya a Japanese national. Asami was quite a popular musician in our community and an ardent steel panist.

We have decided to ‘Play One for Asami’—a project that will creatively highlight Asami’s legacy and love for the steelpan. This project will bring Asami’s music to life. Her steelpan composition ‘Dreaming Girl’ will be developed and adapted for a full steelband. This adapted version as well as Asami’s solo version will be used in creating a music video that we will then send to her friends and family in Japan and share with the global steelpan community.

In addition to bringing Asami’s music to life, the project will also seek to send a message through music to her friends and family in Japan so that they may know that they are not alone in their pain. We will videotape a live performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘You Are Not Alone’ and send it to her friends and family in Japan.

The project will launch on Sunday at the memorial ceremony. Footage from the memorial ceremony will play an important part in the project. In order to create a great impact we are extending an invitation to persons to come to the memorial ceremony on Sunday. Although this is not necessary, we would like persons to come in their respective band jerseys as we think that this will reflect well in the footage.

  • The arrangement of Asami's work for large steel band, would it be available to be played by other steel bands around the world?  I would be interested to play it with the steel band I am a part of in the USA.

    • Sure it will. I guess I should score the arrangement then for that purpose.

      • This is a good thing you all are doing, Blessings.

  • I did not know Asami but as a expatriate Trini my heart goes out to all her friends and family.I am glad to see she is being honoured .
