  • What's wrong with people from Trinidad? is it because Trinidad is the home of the steelpan

    • Just adding some background to my posting the info, the individual posted his request in the comment section under a youtube video I posted Trinidad All Stars ‘Medley’…my further investigation found that he is recruiter associated with www.proship.com‎...that provides…Job offers for any musician, performer, technician and entertainer who wants to work on shows for cruise ships, resorts, hotels and casinos, A.L. Nunes comments should help clarify some of the issues we are having here.
I believe it up to the soloist/pannist as a businessman/woman to look into this employment opportunity and determine how he or she is going to sell their skills and negotiate a contract that will give them job security and benefits that most musicians don’t often enjoy.

      •  So could one get the food & accommodation without playing/teaching?

Well no - those are perks that go along with the job. In order to get them you must be an employee. (and the accommodations aren't anything nice anyhow.)

I  looked into a job with this company a while back, and it wasn't appealing to me. It's not a "negotiated contract" - it is a regular job; a 6-month contract with specified duties (number of hours per day, performance requirements - must have 'X number' of tunes/set lists prepared and ready to go;  play specified number of sets per day with such-and-such amount of time for breaks, etc.), and it offers a set salary. Performers live 4-to-a-room, in the small employee cabins along with the kitchen workers and various other ship's employees....  it is decent pay but I couldn't take living in a tiny cramped dorm-style ship's bunk, in close quarters with 3 other people I don't even know, for 6 months at a time. To me that's an unappealing way to live as a regular job setup.... job security or not, I'd be miserable living in those conditions. Just not worth it to me, personally.

Although - I could see where it might be worth it to put up with that for one or two 6-month stints if someone wants to make some decent money and build up some savings;  since once you're on board pretty much ALL your living expenses are covered - food, beverage, health care, etc. All the money you earn you basically keep, since there's not much you need to spend it on while aboard the ship.

  • What gives? What is wrong with American pan players? Especially those born of Trinidadian parents

  • Bede, could you elaborate more on Lyons being trapped with this

  • Umm! umm! Free food & accommodation? Is that an inducement? So could one get the food & accommodation without playing/teaching? Just a thought.

  • SMH....SMH...TRINIS...DON'T DO THIS...INBOX ME FOR PROPER INFO..

    • I had a Facebook friend name Bob Lyons, I think he almost got trap into that

  • There are lots of other islands with excellent pan players....St. Lucia, Antigua & Dominica to name a few.

  • Why does it have to be people from Trinidad.?
