Everything Related to the Steelpan Instrument and Music
The mighty Phase II is a card-carrying member of the Big 5. Rarely do members of the esteemed group get a "hell no" from the judges. This year the Phase II got it in both the semi finals and finals. Why? Could it be that Boogsie's music simply went over the head of the judges? Or this was not a year for unknown original Pan tunes? Or the judges were right, it wasn't happening this year?
Bugs...When yuh crooked...yuh ben"...plain and simple...Let them dust they pants and come again next year...Hard Luck...
In reality, this year 2017, was Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra's year to win - the plain truth!
What is the status of Carib Tokyo Steel Orchestra?
well me friend, boogsie himself did NOT play !
bugs: I think that the problem began with the production of the calypso. The musical idea was brilliant but the vocalist and the lyricist who worked on that song just butchered it giving it very little chance of becoming popular. And that swing back to "popular" seemed to play a big role this year.
Claude I totally agree with you.
The top popular tunes used this year were all very well produced. The production of Boogise tune was awful. His song never had a chance of embedding itself in the consciousness of the listeners. The days of anyhow production for a panorama tune is over. While this is not suppose to impact on the judges, it clearly does.
"never had a chance of embedding itself in the consciousness of the listeners" like yuh went to school in England boy!!! Well put!!!
Bugs, I believe this is a good thing for Phase ll. Firstly, Boogsie has to start putting out his music earlier, he is always the last man out with his music,
Secondly he has to be careful not to get thrown on the heap with Ray and Andy, at present this is where he's at. Beautiful music don't win panorama, you have to find the right mixture, often times this is difficult for people like Boogsie because it may consist compromising his music.
Watching at how the spectators reacted to All Stars performance should be enough to let you know what a panorama tune has to do to people.
My dear Cecil, you seemed to have forgotten that Boogsie and Phase II have won seven(7) Panoramas and have been the runner up on numerous occasions, so they definitely know about the right "mixture" as you call it. Phase II used to be the band everybody wanted to hear and used to mash up de place way more than All Stars did on Saturday night, so I'm confused as to what you mean by "compromising his music." The issue Phase has is that it needs to "get with the program" as far as tune selection goes, I think we're past the era of own compositions and the popular or "commercialized" tunes is the way forward now. The reason the band placed so low is simply because the arrangement was terrible at best and the band had absolutely no vibes, they couldn't make me believe in what they we're playing. I have been playing pan for 30 years as and I know lack of confidence when I see it(and hear it) That's just my lil 2 cents. BTW congrats to my band CAL Invaders on jumping 4 spots from 8th to 4th place......most improved band on final night!
