UPDATED LIST OF PASSED STEELBANDS

We now have an integrated list of “PASSED STEELBANDS” which we can officially hand over to the NEW VISIONARIES for honing and further research and development. This is just a starting point and there is still considerable work left to be done. The WST FORUMITES responded to the call and contributed around 245 steelbands. This list is a combination of the records provided by Jeremy de Barry and the NEW VISIONARIES and the WST members. After duplicates were removed we ended up with about 400 PASSED STEELBANDS.

We wish the NEW VISIONARIES swift success as they attempt to develop and complete this historical document. There are about 93 bands that are yet to have the “LOCATION” field filled in and that should be the first priority.

In looking at the data we know that the PAN was developed in GREATER PORT-OF-SPAIN so we expected the largest number of bands to be from THE CITY. But San Fernando and Tobago gave the Port-of-Spain PAN MEN a run for their money. San Fernando came in with 35 bands and Tobago came in with a shockingly high 29 BANDS. Port-of-Spain came in first with 38 bands but that did not include GREATER PORT-OF-SPAIN. For example, St. James came in with 27 bands and Woodbrook came in with 4 bands. But San Fernando and Tobago like PLENTY PAN – CLEARLY!!!

St James and Belmont might well be considered the HEARTS OF CITY PAN.  St. James now leads with 33 BANDS and Belmont follows with 18 bands.

With 22 bands ARIMA cannot  be left out as a major contributor to the evolution; and with 14 bands SAN JUAN deserves a special mention.

These totals are subject to MAJOR CHANGE once the 93 "TBD" bands get their rightful city or town designation.

It is left to the NEW VISIONARIES in terms of how they choose to organize the groupings.

Thanks to all the contributors!!! And we hope that in a few months time the NEW VISIONARIES can come back to the FORUM with a “QUALITY LIST” to be placed in the archives of the WST FORUM.

[As a lover of CALYPSO it would be nice to see a CALYPSONIAN take this list and compose a nice "TRIBUTE TO STEELBANDS OF THE PAST" calypso.]

  • Claude please add these bands

I got these from an eighty-one year old  panman named Vernon St Cyr from Laventille,

Grow More Food - Woodbrook (forerunner of Invaders)

    Mission to Moscow -Esipnet St.Laventille

    Torrid Zone - Success Village

    Kentuckians - Success Village

Canal Zone - Private Road. Success Village

    Valentino - Prizgar Lands

Tropical Harmony- Williams St. Success Village ( founded by Vernon St Cyr )

Ah little history he also gave me,is that in 1957 his band (named after Tropical Harmony from Arima) played together with Cyril Diaz Orch. on the road for carnival. This has to be a definite first and probably the last time that a top brass orchestra and a steelband combined to play on the road for carnival.

The songs they played together were; Thelma Was A Dancer and Sailor Man.

  • Good Job Mr Gonzales, Bands from Sackville Street P.O.S not mentioned. Boys from92nd Street,Salome out of Red Army. The Original Melo Harps. Youth Stars and Merry Makers was also from Sackville Street.Keep up the good work.

  • St JAMES IS THE MECCA OF PAN, It's high time that the TRUTH / FACT'S, be disclosed, pan started at what is know 18 Guthrie Street St James, under a mango tree adjacent to a shango tent in the rear of 30 Patna Street, in the summer of 1936, by Carlton "sonny/sire" Roach, beating on TIN and KLIM milk cans, and square biscuit tin pans, the actual notes on the klim pans derived in 1938 also by Roach, the name of that dustbin band was called "Harlem Nightingales", the next band came out was "Oliver St John Steel band" 1941 from upper Bombay Street St James, in 1942 the paint pan derived where Roach had to burn the paint off the pan to get it too tune and sound right,  in 1939 Alexander Ragtime  Dustbin band from Newtown came out with fake music sheet mimicing musicians, the next band came out was "Hob Hill" from Seventh and Guthrie Street,1946 and lasted 2 months, Young Sun Valleyians / Sunvalley in 1946,  then Cairo 1946 on Carlton Avenue St James, then Grow More Food / Tripoli, Crossroads, Crossfire, Blue Stars, Pan Pioneers, Northern Stars/ North Stars, Silver Stars, Del Vikings, Symphonettes, Wonder Harps, Samba Boys, Ft George Syncopators, to get the rest of the bands, you'll have to wait for my book "The ORACLE" ok...

  • Mr Gonzales; I told U from the beginning that St James alone derived 42 bands, I gave U several bands especially one from Cocorite named "Pan Pioneers" from Harding Place Cocorite, also I gave U "Belle stars" from Brieves Road that Band evolve from "Cairo", I also gave U.Drum Phonics and Modern Sounds, theres a band from Cocorite Ft George area named Ft George Syncopators, but some how U chose not to pay attention, there's lot more but I'll stop for know...

    • I will add them!!!

      • I added your entries. Thanks very much! You just got us up to 400 BANDS in all.
