Beginning this year, August 11 will be celebrated globally as World Pan Day. This was announced last Sunday by Beverley Ramsey-Moore, new President of the governing body for steelbands in Trinidad and Tobago, Pan Trinbago. She was speaking at the Pan Trinbago headquarters in Port of Spain where activities were held to mark the occasion.
The activities were part of a series held during the month of August which has been declared as Pan Month. It forms part of a concerted effort by the pan movement in Trinidad and Tobago to promote the steelband. The Pan Trinbago president said that pan is a marvellous instrument of the 20th century and that it is played and celebrated all over the world today.
She remarked that not only is pan played and celebrated in the Caribbean, its home, but there are now pan associations and pan-playing events in a range of countries such as Denmark, the USA, Japan, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
Ms Ramsey-Moore remarked that “as we look at it throughout the world, it should be recognised by our own. We will be there to support all organisations which have pan in their different countries…Let pan be spread throughout the world. It is our gift to the world”, she said.

It has no structure, it has no express purpose, it is designed to project an image globally, and that image is not one of any panman or steelband. It is for that specific reason panmen are deliberately being excluded from anything that may be associated in the future with the conceptualization of this infamous event. it is great to see us having a world pan day however was there any consideration for the steel pan movement in your front yard given that Grenada carnival is always around this date. this will hamper our ability to part take in a serious way. will world pan day be as the NBA and NFL where only one nation is part taking but they call themselves world champions?
Stephen: WORLD STEELPAN DAY is a GREAT IDEA which I TOTALLY SUPPORT. But they got so excited about the idea that they RUSHED INTO IT without enough consideration. And then you hit the nail on the head: It will turn out to be a ONE NATION thing for the most part with a little global flare here and there.
BUT IT COULD BE A BIG AND GLOBAL THING with the RIGHT ADMINISTRATION!!!
Again, you are on the right path. In the early years, I would focus on Grenada, Barbados, Guyana, Antigua, Jamaica, Curacao, Dominica and St. Vincent (and cities like LONDON and NEW YORK and TORONTO where we have established bases) -- and then just keep expanding from that base tot the rest of the world.
And they done gone down the WRONG ROAD with that ANTHEM already -- so yuh "ONE NATION" theory might just be right. Because if you really understand TRINIDAD -- to TRINIDADIANS TRINIDAD is the WHOLE WIDE WORLD ....
