Raffique Shah replied to Glenroy R Joseph's discussion Clarence Curvan reflects on the passing of his friend and mentor , Joey Lewis
"Talk about memories, Glenroy!!! Cyril Diaz, Bert Inniss, Joey, Clarence, Errol, all maestros in their own right. This morning (Friday), as I watched and listened to Roy 'Pappy' Cape more or less saying goodbye to his active participation,…"

Raffique Shah replied to Pan Times's discussion Dr. Jit Samaroo RIP
"A giant has passed on, the likes of which may never walk this country again. He was a musical genius who worked magic with pan, and also straddled the cultural boundaries like a colossus. He was, too, a most humble human being. To think that the…"

Raffique Shah replied to Claude Gonzales's discussion Between 1950 and 2015, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS have been spent SUBSIDIZING STEELBANDS: was this money well spent?
"We certainly should have seen much more for the billion-or-more public and sponsors' dollars expended on steelbands over the past 60 years. While the instrument and standard of 'panmanship' and music have evolved significantly,…"

Raffique Shah replied to Pan Times's discussion Raffique Shah called it right - by Les Slater
"Thanks, Les, for your kind comments on the interview I did with WST, and for further exploring some salient points I raised. There is need for people with your background and experience in pan to throw out ideas in the hope that those who can make…"

Raffique Shah replied to Pan Times's discussion Raffique Shah - journalist, nationalist, activist, columnist and cultural historian speaks on Pan in Trinidad and Tobago
"Ppl, re pan on the road, for me that means full bands, racks, wheels (castors), fans pushing pans/players the way we did Sunny Side Kids from Freeport to Carapichaima (around 3 miles). We did the same many years ago with Invaders, Renegades,…"

Raffique Shah replied to VALENTINE YOUNG's discussion Panorama is Definitely Too Long.
"There is only one solution: stage four category finals on different days at different venues, leaving Carnival Saturday night for large bands only.  When single pan bands remained pan-round-the-neck, there used to be a well-attended, on-de-road…"

Music from Oil Drums (1956)

"Some years ago, as I researched some protest/message songs that influenced my generation in the 1960s/1970s (Where have all the flowers gone/If I had a hammer), I stumbled on Pete Seeger who wrote these two. I soon learnt that Seeger was more than a…"

"Folks, bear in mind that I wrote this piece back in 2001--12 years ago. I do not recall what prompted me to write it, but having re-read it now, there is nothing (except a few errors) that I would change. I wrote from the perspective of an…"

Panorama Champions - 1963 to Present - Performances

"Thanks, fellas--this is a treat. My instinctive reactions? On those I listened to from the 1960s/70s: First, the relatively high quality of instruments and panmanship then. I had forgotten how good these were. Arrangements were less complicated than…"
