“When my back is up against a wall, I work best!” champion steelband arranger Len “Boogsie” Sharpe said yesterday morning. He was describing the imaginative musical lines and infectious phrases that constituted the scintillating arrangement of Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove’s tune of choice, Jump High, which ultimately led to the band’s victory in the National Panorama large band final at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.

  • Oswald;;,,,, that's it, very good and thank you, it's hell as time pass.
  • Oswald,,,, you are right I should have corrected that, what year did
Rudolph Charles when to court to change the decision of wining north zone
because no one new the tune?
    • Garvin,  Despers went to court in 1974, but lost and were not in the final. In 1982, Despers again went to court, this time so did Tokyo, Jewel 22 and Valley Harps. They won their case and Despers came 3rd playing Nelson's 'Party'. Renegades won their first panorama then.

  • Phase ll win north zone first year out.
    • Phase 2 first year out, garvin, was in 1973 when they played Sparrow's ' Mas in May', matter of fact, that was the only time they did not play their arrangers compositions ( Boogsie snd Holmon). The first time they won a North zone was in 1977 playing Boogsie ' I like to beat pan' beating despers into 2nd. Despers eventually won the national panorama, the Phase came 5th

    • Also the first band to win Pan in the 21st Century Competition with "Cherish".

  • Very very happy about the win. Started to support Phase II since the late 1970's "79 is Mine" etc. As far as I am concerned Bogsie won on many occasions. I remember in particular Fire Down Below and moreso Birthday Party. Once God spares his life and his mental faculties he is going to become the most decorated arrangers this country has ever seen and to think he can't even read or write music is mind-boggling. God-given talent.

  • Just some trivia on Phase II/Len Sharpe

    (1) Phase II is the only band to make all finals from 1981 through 2014

    (2) Len Sharpe as an arranger has been to the finals more than the rest, (35 times)

    (3) Len Sharpe has been in the top-three the most (23 times)

    (4) This is their 3rd back to back victory

    (5) In 1996, Len Sharpe had a mere 13 days, yet he led Phase II to top the semi and ran 2nd at the finals

    (6) They have lost 6 panoramas by an average of 1.42 marks; this is the first time they won by a mere point.

    (7) Len Sharpe is the 5th person to win panorama as a pannist and later as an arranger.

    (8) Yes! I know there are a few more (lol)

    • Ian, Thanks for providing the statistical data, after reading and re-reading,Trinidad All Stars should never insinuate, that they were robbed. I still subscribed to the view that Panorama is first and foremost a musical competition.
