Tell Me Why - Metro Steel Orchestra - arr. Clive Bradley

The year is 1990, the place is panorama night at the Brooklyn Museum and master arranger Clive Bradley is about to win his third New York panorama with this arrangement.  Bradley captures the crowd before the intro is even completed. The audio recording is not very good (from the archive vaults), but it allows you to hear those classic Clive Bradley movements, transitions and urban influences. In addition, at 5 min 53 sec - you can hear the solo Clive Bradley asked a young Garvin Blake to put in.  Indeed, a sign of good things to come in the future of Mr. Blake.  This particular incarnation of Metro Steel Orchestra ushered in the beginning of the era of large New York steel orchestras of more than 100 players...

  • This was my first win as Leader of Metro one of the greatest Steel Orchestra's in NYC.  Some of the greatest pan players I've ever seen in one band.  Thank you Bradley and the Metro family.

  • The Master at Work. Pan's genius, Sir Clive Bradley. We miss you.

  • I had to break out my tenor....interestingly enough I remember almost every note of this because it was my first panorama.  I also have this in video when we did the Atlantic Antic a few weeks after Panorama.  If y'all remember a plucky 11 year old girl (the only little girl playing that year) who always ran with Nicky...that was me.  Top of the spaceship.

  • @ Carlton E. Munroe

    How much was the prize?

Who were some of the other bands present that night? And what positions did come?

  • That is collected the p-a-r money and disappeared.

  • I was also a player with pan masters on that winning night, Dave Labaree was the Captain of the band. Dave collected the pan -a-rama and took off, never to be seen again.

  • Correction, prior to Metro, Pan masters won the New York Pan-a-Rama with over 100 players so lets give jack his jacket. aka: tahzann / aka: curly!

  • Awesome!!!!

  • Brilliant! This is total masterful expiation! Very enormous Steel-Pan sound.........
