Friend Or Foe - Claude Gonzales

Today, I begin a series I title Friend Or Foe. This series seeks to clarify everyone's positions, opinions and attitudes toward the instrument we call "pan". Over the next few weeks, my "spare time" will be spent researching the posts of various personalities on When Steel Talks, going back to their earliest comments, and coming up to the present. I leave the reader to form their own conclusions, as to who is a "friend" and who is a "foe" of not only the instrument, but the people and "movement" that represent it. Other socio-political and race- and class-based attitudes and opinions are also revealed in their comments on WST, and again, it is up to the reader to form their own conclusions. I am merely providing the evidence, as recorded and time-stamped on WST. Hope you all find this effort to be helpful in recognizing the enemies of the instrument, her people and movement. See attached for the first look at "Friend Or Foe", as we examine the comments of none other than Mr. Claude Gonzales.

Ghost Who Knows When They Talk, They Forget What They Said Can (And SHOULD) Be Held Against Them!

P.S. I will update the document, to bring it current.

  • So he chooses to be among his 1%, by making statements like this:

I suddenly realize that I should not be involved in this debate because I DO NOT have an emotional stake. From my early childhood in the fifties I always felt that the pan was a crude instrument because it never delivered the FIDELITY of the calypso which I so loved. Many times I would hear a panside play a calypso and I would wonder why they even bothered because the interpretation was so, so poor and could NOT be delivered on those instruments. I consider the instrument to be extremely musically limited; and I am not alone in that opinion.

(I wonder how Tony Williams and Dr. Ellie Mannette, would feel about his "crude" comment, after all the science and technology they put into developing the instrument. SUCH AN INSULT! And, ONLY on When Steel Talks, they could get away with it. NOT in my Facebook group, Pan Forever On De Barbargreen.)

Ghost Who Knows Corey Will Wait For An Answer Forever, Because Claude Gonzalez Is Consistent In His Contempt. (And this is pre-Ghost, so please don't buy into his "waiting for Ghost" excuse. I have NOTHING to say to this agent of chaos! PERIOD!!!)

  • Thanks for the setup GHOST. I have been meaning to say this for a very long time!!!

Ninety Nine percent of the posters on this forum expect everybody to come on to the site everyday and say: I LOVE THE PAN; THE PAN IS THE GREATEST MUSICAL INSTRUMENT EVER INVENTED; THE PAN IS THE ONLY MUSICAL INSTRUMENT INVENTED IN THE 20TH CENTURY; PANORAMA IS THE GREATEST MUSICAL EVENT IN THE WORLD; PANORAMA WILL SOON HAVE BILLIONS OF PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD LOOKING AT THE SHOW AND BRINGING IN BILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO PANTRINBAGO; OUR PAN PLAYERS ARE THE GREATEST MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD; PAN COULD PLAY ANY KINDA MUSIC ... AND ON AND ON AND ON.

If you ever express any kind of critique or objectivity you are the ENEMY. But I don't buy in to that PARANOIA.
