The greater the superhit the greater the possiblity of it being copied in some form or fashion. That's why Record companies try to recapture the cost of production in its first sales of records. Then after that it begins to pay royalties to the artistes. The bigger the number the bigger the extended costs.

The traditional role of a record label, in the broadest sense, is to bankroll a band until they start making lots of money, at which point the label gets to keep most of it. They own the master recordings a band makes, and by taking on this ownership they put all of their resources behind selling said recordings.

Here Invader explains how he composed the song Run and Coca Cola.....http://youtu.be/sD9autVt-q8

      • Invader was obviously being very discreet in his comments.

Thank you, ODW. You're the man!!

Most people don't know about your cultural contributions, but I do.

        Great post!

  • What's amazing about "Rum and Coca Cola" was how the true meaning of the song was lost in translation.

It was actually a sad commentary on the American presence in Trinidad around World War II.

What do you think those poor mothers and daughters were doing for the Yankee Dollar?

    • This is a very important point Glenroy.  Many people don't want to touch this but the reality is that many places where the US has had bases have been left psychologically disturbed and dysfunctional. Moreover there are lasting negative ramifications that can still be seen and felt today. Trinidad is no different.  One of the main issues Ben Laden and the 911 plane hijackers claim they had with the US was the presence of the US military in Saudi Arabia.

    • Working. LMAO!
      • Times were hard in Trini back then.

According to Sparrow (and he should know),at night  young men would leave  their girlfriends at the clubs that the "Yankee" sailors frequented.

They'd pick them up (and their purses)  the next day.

No wonder he sang "Yankees gone, and Sparrow take over now".
