Story Time with Mr. Sanch – Pan Music Kindles the Spirit of Christmas 2020
In Trinidad and Tobago, the Christmas Season is traditionally celebrated from around the middle of November one year to early January the following year. It is a time of joy and festivity during which there are usually public concerts facilitated by steel bands, choirs, parranderos, etc.
Such an event was hosted by @Trinidad all Stars Steel Orchestra with special guest Frank Fernandes, an eminent pianist from Barbados and Susan Quamie, clarinetist, at the @Central Bank Auditorium on November 28, 1993, under the baton of the late Nelson Villafana, the orchestra's musical director for more than 10 years. The 100-minute production was recorded live, remastered, and released as the @Sanch Electronix Ltd Special Edition Series double HDCD 0404-2 in 2004.
One of the strengths of modern steel orchestras is their ability to faithfully mimic classical music played by their conventional counterparts and on this occasion All Stars’ execution of Leroy Anderson’s ‘A Christmas Medley’ was spellbinding. Some of the panists read from scores but most of them played by rote. Their challenging repertoire included selections from R and J Strauss, Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Rossini, Bach, Ketelbey, Grieg, Jobim, Monti, Anderson, Gershwin, Wells, and Rudder.
The rendition, track 6 of disc 2, is a heavenly compilation of ubiquitous carols from composer Leroy Anderson’s songbook that segued seamlessly into spontaneous applause from the capacity audience of over 400 patrons. This majestic performance immediately kindles the spirit of Christmas 2020 by beseeching prayer for the souls of those who did not survive life’s ordeals as one simultaneously contemplates the uncertain destinies awaiting next year’s unblemished, unborn babies who will replace them.
