Unsponsored steelbands get support for Panorama 2K13

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Fifty unsponsored steel orchestras received cheques to help them prepare for Panorama 2013 from Scotiabank Trinidad and Tobago Foundation on Tuesday evening at Scotia Centre, Park Street, Port of Spain.

This year being the nation's 50th anniversary of Independence, the bank decided to give cheques to an equal number of bands. This initiative is a key event on the calendar of the Foundation which oversees the philanthropic and charitable work of the bank.

  • Patrick/Bertel. let me put in a few words on this as there is a lack of awareness how the Scotia payments started and continued. Thirty four years ago, I was the PRO of PTB under George Goddard. I approached Ronnie Chan the MD of Scotia and an ex Silver Stars player for a donation. He asked how are you going to use the money? my reply was that unsponsored bands see hard times even to make it to the finals, so I intend to divide the money into three and give the highest placed unsponsored band in each zone a prize, so it's like a zonal competition for unsponsored bands. he liked the ides and Scotia donated $2,100 with the highest placed unsponsored band in each zone receiving $700.00. It continued to grow as the years went by and PTB was ALWAYS NOTIFIED AND GRATEFUL for this venture. Unsponsored bands are invited to send letters for assistance and some were even called and reminded to send in their letters. Patrick, all of this took place many years before the Scotia employee who resigned was anywhere near Pan trinbago and was a recent employee of the bank when this was handled by one Mr. Laurence.

Pantrinbago is notified and invited every year and they attend, but this year one rep came as they had some staff function on the same day the cheques were handed out. Some said the date for the function was deliberately planned on the Scotia date so that certain people will not attend. To me it does not martter, but as far as I am concerned one came and that was good enough.

Bertel Scotia will not give the money to PTB to hand out even if the cheques were made out to the bands and no one can do anything with them. That is very big PR for Scotia Bank and the Scotia Foundation as it is media filled and a very good plug for the bank.Over the years pantrinbago reps even handed out cheques. Asking for the names of the bands and the amounts is utter foolishness. All bands will NOT get equal amounts. There is a minimum and a maximum amount and you can't expect a single pan band with less over head to get the same amount as an unsponsored conventional band.

Let's thank Scotia for their on going help and not put ideas in their head with unnecessary bickering and foolishness about naming bands and amounts or giving Pantrinbago the money to hand out. If you give pantrinbago the money to hand out bands will end up with 90% as they will take 10% as they do with everything else, so I suggest you leave well alone.

    • Thank you for that.  Clarity as opposed to bachanal an innuendo

    • Like I said before "integrity" is  spelt with the letter "S" bisected by two vertical lines.  Panorama is for Tuners, Arrangers and Captains/Managers  while the panmen play on.

One must remember that if your bread is buttered, you don't go looking for lard or margarine.

Bertel says that "TRANSPARENCY" is vital, but not too many people would agree with that, some have things to hide.

    • If one wants to be transparent and accountable, why is naming bands and amts considered "utter foolishness"? What is there to hide? NGC sponsored two bands recently, should they have named the bands or should they have been kept secret?

Please explain why the naming of the bands is "utter foolishness". Who is making the criteria here? Did Scotiabank do a survey to determine who has overhead or not? One would assume that ALL single pan bands would get the same and so would conventional bands. To lump all of them would make your argument specious at best.

I don't remember anyone saying to give PT monies to hand out, and why is there a "fear" of putting ideas into SB'S heads? When one cannot come up with answers to questions, the fools call the questions "foolishness".

Cynthia Ozick once said and I quote "IT IS THE FUNCTION OF A LIBERAL UNIVERSITY NOT TO GIVE THE RIGHT ANSWERS, BUT TO ASK RIGHT QUESTIONS". Study that awhile.

There are more questions that one would be hard pressed to give answers. I wont rest my case.

    • I rest my case Gerard, Thank you. This is why TRANSPARENCY is so vital here in Trini if this is so. A simple explanation is all that is needed from those in authority and I am certain 'the unnecessary bickering and foolishness about naming bands and amounts or giving Pan Trinbago to hand out' will not leave the mind to speculate on why things are done the way it was done. Again, Thank you Scotia Bank for investing in our National Instrument. By the way Gerard, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

  • Awfully generous of ScotiaBank to give donations to the  50 unsponsored bands. Would have been more generous if  WST could give the names of ALL 50 and the amts received. PLAYERS WANT TO KNOW.

  • It is interesting that Scotia Bank went directly to the bands to give these cheques. This speaks volumes as to the confidence level in Pan Trinbago. Thank you Scotia Bank.

    • Surely Pan Trinbago must be aware of what the Scotia Bank was doing so that they have provided the Bank with names of the bands. On the other hand I am sure that if bands are running business in correct order their individual PRO and the rest of their committees must apply to several institions and business in the private and public sector on their own for sponsorship. That is the problem with us we must provide negative and Pan Trinbago will be the bobbolee for all the good that happens and the bad. THANK YOU SCOTIA BANK and I hope that this is because bands are running their bands peoperly

    • This has nothing to do with Pan Trinbago, but the benevolence of ScotiaBank. Should the amts be published? Should the names of the unsponsored bands be published? I think pan players would want to know, A  function was held and bands reps. went to Scotiabank.

      • I disagree Patrick, protocol dictates that you at least work through the world governing body of Pan. This IS a result of no confidence in how the present Pan Trinbago spends money, it was the same with SteelfesTT.
