I have been learning to play the Steel Pan over the past year.
My steel pan was made by Tom “Tommy Rey” Reynolds from Sanford Florida. Tom is from St. Croix U.S. Virgin Islands and has been playing and making steel drums since 1956.
My mother was born and raised in Trinidad.
My father worked at Van Leer West Indian Steelworks in La Brea located next to the famous Pitch Lake. As a young man, Joseph Barrett, worked here as an apprentice. On breaks from work, he helped develop “notes” and tune Steel Pan’s using heat from a carbide torch. Joes love for rhythm and creative thinking helped the steel drum progress during the early 1950s.
I would love to connect to a group that could help me develop my steel pan skills and methods.
