Mr. Kirk, I don't really intend to be very detailed on the Starlift/Ray Holman issue as I know it will be forever ongoing. The views you expressed will definitely seem right when looking from the outside, however you stated that your opinion may be wrong. From on the inside, it will be.Starlift is willing to accept Ray Holman as they did five times over a ten year period 1997 t0 2007, after he walked away from the band in 1974.He said he can now be hired as a contractor working for the band. That being the case he must be a part of negotiations with a signed contract upon completion of negotiations, which he refused to do on all five occasions he returned.
Unknown to the committee he did certain things regarding the tuning in the band and when told that it cannot happen as the committee must be informed of what he wants and can't bring in people to do what he wants, he threatened to stop the tune, take his players and leave.Having made it to the finals the management humbled and gave in.
In 1974 when he left, he agreed to do a sparrow tune for panorama and did a verse and chorus, then two weeks before panorama said it's his tune or nothing. The then management was opposed but the players over ruled and his tune was done and the band did not reach the semis. However that same year he worked with another band Pandemonium and did a sparrow tune for them and reneged on Starlift.
1974 was the first 2007 was the last a lot more happened between there.Ray Holman is undoubtedly on of the better panorama arrangers around even at almost 69 years of age He spoke to his die hard supporters about returning to Starlift as Starlift is "home", but guess what , a first condition was already put down."The captain has to go" Now that election is in June the opponent to Franco has a campaign theme...vote for me and I will bring back Ray Holman.
He did in fact mention wanting to take over the band. Are people not wondering why such a talented arranger is wasting away drilling a band? He should be having a problem trying to decide which band to arrange for from a long list on his lap.His demands are too great for many of the bands he worked for once who did not rehire him twice.
I really did not want to give the small percentage of the episodes as I am seen as a " hater" of the individual by his loyal supporters and as I tell them...bring the man...sit and negotiate...sign a bonding contract and not just have him regardless because you will make a final. We did on five occasions, what happened when he left on Ash Wednesday??
