Dear Mr. Ivan Hutchinson & Mr. Glenroy R. Joseph & The friend who told their version of the story. Straight from the horses mouth.  My name is Orville DeVlugt "Dutchy" The guitarist of the Dutchy Brothers Band of the sixties. I was cooking my Palau pigeon peas and rice, I took a break and signed on to check my mail and saw "Check out River Bank jump up by the Dutchy Brothers" When I read the commentary of what was said and told, I decided to eat first so I can tackle the errors. Ivan Hutchinson came close but no cigars, almost true, everyone else is so far from the truth about what happened that night. Here is the real story: It was carnival of 1963, Byron Lee was on tour in Trinidad sponsored by a promoter by the name of Agostini, "Argos" he booked the Dutchy Brothers to first play a non stop at the Naparima Bowl in San Fernando on the Carnival Saturday night, then on Carnival Monday night at the Perseverance Club, a former USO Club for the US Military during World War Two. The Dutchy Brothers played on the road Monday and Tuesday for The Edmund Hart Band prior to the Monday night Non Stop dance with Byron Lee. The unfortunate incident occurred this way and let it be known: Dutchy Brothers first played River bank Jump Up, the crowd was having such a great time. When we were through playing the song, one of our followers from POS Who followed us every where, his nickname was "South" Upon hearing Byron Lee beginning to play River Bank Jump Up very slowly not pleasing to the crowd, South jumped up on our stage while being drunk of course, stumbled on the stage knocking down some equipment and Earl Rodney's Bass Amp, the bass player after My brother Eugene left for London. When that occurred, the great musician, arranger and steel pan player who stuttered a lot not being able to hold his temper, Earl Rodney pushed "South off the stage the crowd start to scatter as The Mighty Sparrow sang in the to one is murder and the night was history, every one started fighting and running, bottles flying everywhere, the police and all was hiding. I was right in the middle of the stage, there you have that part of the facts. The other part of the story pertaining to the Dutchy Brothers was weaker than Byron Lee is un heard of, knowing we had to play on the road for both carnival days, we reinforced the entire band, and especially knowing that we are meeting Byron Lee on carnival Monday night at Perseverance Hall. The line up went this way: Pete  and Roderick Boarde on tenor sax, Hart's man sweet sax on alto sax, Norbert Scanterbury "Cherry Pink" and Errol Ince on trumpet, Ernest Castello and Ned Sampson on trombones, myself and Clarence Wares on guitar, Ottmar on the piano, Rudolph on the drums with a six piece rhythm section, that took care of that segment. Ottmar never stood up with anger or with any facial expression of discontent, "yes" we strapped after the gangs started pelting bottles at bands, but we never had cause to unstrap. I did not lift a chair and hit anyone with it. We were big strong guys lifting our weights since we were teenagers, but we had lot's of support from Stephen Gold Teeth and the boys, we had to discipline couple of guys on occasion in our parents club known as Splendid Club in San Fernando where the band was formed and played every Friday night when available. We were music lovers not fighters, tempers were present when and where necessary. I am pleased to set the record straight. Mr. Glenroy R. Joseph we have to talk.

      Respectfully,

      Orville Dutchy DeVlugt

Hey Ivan , not sure if Liam played for Hillside because I have been living in for the past 43 years , long before Liam was born . I remember when Hillside was started by Ali Cooper and John Wilkes in 1970 . This was an offspring of Antilleans . We had a couple of guys from Princess Town in Antilleans , one was Edgehill , very good double second player I wi be in San Fernando later this month . Send me your phone number if you want , and I will give you a buzz . Blessings Winston .
