I’m a musician, guitar, uke, play in 2-3 different bands, and have been enamored by the steel pan for many many years.. I first heard pan’s one the Hollies song Carrie Ann back when I was a kid.. I am very interested in learning the tricks of the trade in fabricating pans. I tried to teach myself 30 years ago from the Kim Loy Wong/Pete Seeger book on pan making, tried a couple of times, but family and career got in the way at that time.. I am a Master Research Technician at the National Renewable Emery Labs in Golden, Colorado for the last 28 years, I’ve built many SS vacuum chambers and complex research tools.. I’m known as “bob the builder”. I’m an accomplished metal fabricated, I’m very used to working w torches, hammers, chisels, understand basic material science of metallurgy and work hardening, and I have a great and very sensitive ear for music.. I’d be a good pan maker and even a better tuner.. I’m retiring in May, and would like to take a course in pan making.. I have the hand skills necessary, just need to learn the tricks to shorten the basic learning curve, and then make a bunch of pans to get the art of making and tuning down. I want to build an orchestra for my local high school.. and possibly help tune the few pans in the Denver metro area.. my interest is in building, playing will take some time to develop.. I like metal, (I don’t like wood, which is why I buy guitars and Ukes).. I know how to use center punches and hammers for sinking and smoothing and tuning. But as a anything the devil is in the details.. can anyone recommend where I can take a course/schooling in the art of pan making and fabrication? I already have the basic skills necessary, just not the “art”. Thanks, Marc.. 303-537-2445 marc_susan@msn.gov marc.landry@nrel.gov
