I teacher percussion at the University of Mississippi. In 1986 I organized the first steel band in the state of Mississippi at Mississippi Valley State University. At that time I don't believe there was a steel band in the entire Mid-South region. I formed my second steel band at the University of Mississippi in 1995.
Mississippi Valley no longer has a band. As a matter of fact their is only one historically black university that still has a steel band (Central State in Ohio). Leonard Moses is the teacher their. There's been only three historically black universities that have had steel band that I know of: Mississippi Valley State, Bethune Cookman College and Central State.
