Hi Steve , how's it going ? Haven't seen you for a while now. I used to see you at Niceys sometimes . Glad to see your comment on Alan. He was the best of our time in Sando. Blessings, Winston. BTW I saw Belve earlier this year at my aunts funeral. He is looking good.
My name is Dr. Andrew Martin and I am writing a book on the US Navy Steel Band. Can you tell me more about the film 18 on steel and the role you and Sundowners had in it?
Hi glenroy a lot of pan folks cannot remember that Lynn Tate, Milton Lyions, Ralph Rice, Selwyn Baptaste
all were First and Second place winners in the Pong Solo class in the 50s, & 60s music festival at queens hall
all south men (Sando men). As a matter of fact if I remember correct Mr Rice from sundowners came second and first in two streight years. and Mr Baptaste is credited with introducing pan in the schools in England. (south Man)
I would also like to add to the list of Top South Pan Men, Steve Lalsingh of Maestros Steel Orch , Jameel Whiby of Antellian All Stars , and Raphael ( Rayfee ) Passey of West Stars and Fonclaire and a Member of the National SteelBand . Steve Regis and Rayfee are brothers and Brothers In Law to " Wire Austin " so you could see how much Pan Talent exist right here . I also believe that Steve and Rayfee were the only brothers to be in the National Steel Band at the same time 1967 representing 2 different Bands , Steve the rep for Texaco West Stars and Rayfee the rep for Fonclaire . Thanks .
Glad to see someone else standing up for the south steelband movement which made significant contributions to the development of the steelband.
My love for pan didn't develop from hearing "tong" bands on the radio. It was from experiencing the glory days of pan on San Fernando when there were many very good bands on the road at Carnival .
I remember on Carnival days of my youth when you would see great bands like Sundowners, Hatters, All Stars, Free French, Southern Marines, Rouges Regiment, Sea Bees, Teenage Symphony, Antillians and other bands (I can't remember them all}, and this was even before the heyday of Guinness Cavaliers.
Few recordings exist for these bands, and as far as I know only Southern All Stars and Southern Symphony were recorded in the fifties, and later bands like Hatters , Cavaliers and Texaco West Stars in the sixties and seventies.
And BTW, add Nerlin "Lynn" Tate from All Stars to Aldwyn's list.
Hi steve I don't understsnd how some pan folkes from POS acts as if there was no pan in the south I saw Bede saying that he knows nothing about south he is aTOWN Man. Here are some info for some of the guys from POS. South was always holding their own with pan tn TDAD. Lincon Noel (South) Coker (south) Allan (south) Bonaparte (south) Teo stevens (south) Profesor (south) Achiba (south) Regis (south) Mohamed (south) Belve Rice (south) Regalo (south) Wire (south) Selwyn Baptaste (south) E Rodney (south) M Lions (south) liam Teauge (south) and many more have contribured and done very well for pan in TDAD some are leaders and arangers, tuners, panorama and ping pong solo winners. so gentlemen don't forget the south,

Hi steve You said you first saw Earl Rodney playing with three sticks
When i first saw It, it was Earl, and Belgrave (block) bonaparte from southern symphony
and they were using four (4) sticks instead of three I also saw allan Sundowners Tuner using four sticks on many occasion.
