Watch more http://ning.it/1c9zJ6T In Carnival Messiah it is against that sense of profound rupture of African enslavement that a metaphor for a new kind of culture and and belief system can be re-worked and become a language in which a certain kind of history can be retold, where aspirations for liberation, freedom and emancipation, can be for the first time expressed, and symbolically resurrected. Therefore in Carnival Messiah, Handel’s aria ‘I Know That My Redeemer Liveth’ , sung by the Voice of Truth and danced by the Dove of Peace, is re-carnivalized and re-imagined as RedeemeR, equating instead the Christian institution of resurrection with the emancipation, freedom and liberation of black people. I know that my redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth And though worms destroy this body Yet in my flesh I see God For now is Christ risen from the dead the first fruits of them that sleep I know that my RedeemeR lives I know that my RedeemeR lives I know my RedeemeR liveth! Resurrection! Emancipation! Liberation! Freedom!
