Panorama Tune 1965. There have been some discussions lately about this tune which was played by North Stars in the 1965 Panorama. Despers were disqualified that final night because their float which carried the Pans damaged the stage. I would like to hear your opinions about this arrangement and if you felt they would have been in the top 3. I think so. .

  • They may have placed but I don't think in the top 3. In my opinion Pan Am should have placed first as their arrangement and tonal quality was far superior at the time. Guiness however played well and the decision to place them on top was considered fair by most.
  • Boy,you asking answers,of course they would have finished in the top three. Not only that but if the judges of the day were listening they probably would have ended the Cavaliers dynasty on that very Panorama night! Did you not listen to that stylish musical arrangement?
  • Ever since then, the unmistakable "despers sound"......
  • Beverly Griffith was d man, at that era.
  • Sweet music as usual!
  • In this era, Beverly was probably the best known and most popular arranger, even more so than Tony Williams, especially since he was also arranging for one of the top big bands of the day, the Clarence Curvan Orchestra.

(Note I did not say Better than Tony Williams, just more well known)

If my memory serves, I seem to recall that Despers were the favorite to win that year, having placed in the top three the two previous years.

i agree that this arrangement compares well to Tony's, and probably could have been in the top three, but no one could have withstood the force that was Guinness Cavaliers that year.

  • I still have this album on Red see through vynil from RCA Victor. My 1st steelband LP a masterpiece.
  • Beverly Griffith was the master arranger in his own time ... along with the other tunes on that album, like My Pussin'.
