"Roses From the South" - Festival Winners 1964 - Westside Symphony - This band was formed in 1963 with a nucleus of players from North Stars, including Herman "Rock" Johnston who became West Side's leader, tuner, and arranger. It was an instant success when it won the 1964 Steelband Music Festival. The band later changed its name to Sunjets when it gained the sponsorship of BWIA.

  • It never ceases to amaze me how those "ole pan" tenors (spider web, I presume, like North Stars') from way back could have achieved a sonic quality not much less than the best tenors of today. I listened to Duvonne Stewart in concert the other night playing one of the best tenor pans I've ever heard and I now listen to the West Side tenors of the recording and I have to admire what those tuners achieved so many years ago.

  • SWEET MEMORIES!!

  • Bede do you have a copy of this record for if so could you help?

  • Pan Times I was looking at the fine print on the jacket of this record and I made out "True Love" as being one of the tunes and I believe the Test Piece " Voice of the Panman". Could you upload to WST these tunes and what were the other tunes named on the jacket for it's not clearly seen. Thanks.

  • This is my 2nd Request .WestSide Symphony also played " True Love" in this Festival and it was a very beautiful rendition . I believe it was their interpretation of the Edmundo Ross Orch. recording . Edmundo Ross was a very Popular Band leader and a Trini by Birth so lots of Arrangements had a Latin/Calypso Mix and "True Love" was one of them. If any one can Post these performances it would be highly Appreciated . Thanks.
  • Excellent music from  an excellent band. i am indeed happy to be reliving this quality.  In 1964, like many others, I was listening to this on the radio and fell in love with this band. I have absolute regard and respect for Valentino's comment. He is truly correct. I have indelible memories of the musics of Invaders, Starlift, West Side, Third World, and just imagine I came on the scene late. So I missed the whole gamut from St. James, minus Tripoli and North Stars. And there were more....WOW!
  • steelpan is a gift from the ancestors.

  •  Wonder if any of the Panorama champs would consider using a remake of these older pans in their orchestration?

That was  something  Allan Gervais talked about forty years ago.
