Peter, it is okay to feel that way. Sometimes I am not sure that symbols do anything, but it is all we have for now to reward those who produce art or whatever with fervour in the public domain. Of course, I agree with you about Herman Guppy. Yet, for our artists the more meaningful reward is to see that their final years in life are free from the lack of wants. That they enjoy a comfortable and highly satisfactory living style.
Sorry, Peter Gray, but from here in Barbados I know enough about Dr. Roy Cape to know without any doubt that he richly deserves this honour. I find it hard to believe that any kaiso-knowing and kaiso-loving Trinidadian, if you are a Trini, would seek to question Pappy as a "pioneer of excellence". Perhaps you should get the opinion of one of the under-signed, Ron Berridge!
Nuff respect to Roy Cape. The man is a walking institution of kaiso and I hope the authorities in T&T make sure they get his memories and his story archived in a professional way.
Sorry Avesha Mohammed, I have to disagree ,... this farce of a degree is a political gimmick of UTT. Where else in the world are Ph. Ds conferred on people for their perceived "contribution to society"? What has Roy Cape done to put him on the same level as a Derek Walcott, for example, or an Ellie Mannette or Cobeau Jack? Call me old-fashioned, but I would still be more comfortable with such awards reserved for pioneers of excellence in whatever field, but not for the sake of appeasing people in search politically correct role models. Give an honorary doctorate to Herman Guppy for his 47 years of tuning because he has now attained the highest level in the art of pan tuning. That I would agree with.
Congrats, Dr. Roy Cape! I am extremely pleased whenever we honour those have contributed well to art and culture to help inflate our national identity. Cheers! Give Praise!
