I have been associated with the Steel Band since the late 50’s and was around for the first Panorama in 1963, I believed was run by the Steelband Association and the President was George Goddard. Since then the focus was on the government to finance the Pan fraternity and that has not changed. I agree with Ben and the Culture Minister that the time has come for Pantrinbago to become self-sufficient and stop relying on handouts from the Government. Panorama is a great show and I will hate to see it go or boycott but it is the demise of Pan; Bands concentrate solely on Panorama and do not prepare repertoire for the road or fetes and if they do not qualified in Panorama they will never leave their Pan-yards. Pantrinbago should be running and creating shows like Pan Ramajay and many more so they can become self-sufficient.
I agree with Ben totally on the issue of the E-Pan, a step in the right direction and it’s great for studio work, but it cannot replace the original Steel Pan.
Hello this is Ashton Craig and i want to say that Ben is totally right on his view's i I'm a pan man from trini and now live is the USA California and panorama is my thing but i know it is also killing the pan i think what they do is make a law the if one is playing for a pan round the neck Band the he should not be able to play with a Big Band .because that is the reason why we are seeing lesser Big band .or another way to do it is put the pan round neck panorama on another time of the year witch will free up pan-men and have more Big bands for panorama it all depends on witch ones you want to save i really don't see the need for pan round neck but they still want to keep them then put them some where in June so that the bigger Bands wont have the problem that they are having now for players and in that way you are now creating another competition for pan.
