Did you know that Trinidad & Tobago can give claim to having the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century? Though it originated by accident, the steelpan has given rise to a movement that can be seen in the US, UK, Switzerland, Japan and more! This promo video shows the evolution of steelpan from the island and its influence on the rest of the world. This film was made by Keith Musaman Morton and Charysse Tia Harper. We hope to complete "Panomundo" with your support as we travel to those countries starting in July 2013. • PAN! A Modern Odyssey

PAN! The Universal Call of the African Drum

  • Is funny see that the steel pan has come a long way ,to be  worlds best to day

  • The account of history by Oscar Pile - How Steelband Started recounting how it "happening by coincident" is noteworthy.  We certainly appreciate different points-of-view, but I do look forward to also seeing the film project, Pan! A Modern Odyssey by Jean Michel Gilbert and Dr Kim Johnson.  All I hope and expect is that attention and homage is paid to the complete history.

  • The steelpan family of instruments (1) did not originate by "accident", and (2) is not the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century. It was invented through careful study and creative imagination, and who knows whether other acoustic instruments that we don't know about were also invented in the 20th century. Who can say in Papua New Guinea someone didn't invent a new wind or string or percussion instrument. When was the Peruvian "rubmba box" invented? Pan is the most important one, that's all.

  • In the history of the world, Steelpan is the Only Musical Instrument to be made into the cycle of 4ths & 5ths, since Pythagoras calculated and re-established this musical theory in the 6th century BC. Many diagrams of the cycle can be found during the ages but no musical instruments.
The original tenor "Pan" voice, tuned from Bb below middle C was invented by Mr Anthony Williams and he followed the cycle; this significant music configuration and his invention was called the Spider Web Pan.
Because of this ground-breaking descovery and unique invention, while considering the accompanying Metallurgical science, Mr Anthony Williams should be nominated for the Peace Prize in Physics.
