In another atmosphere this might do well. Mr Narrell you have great sounding instruments and seasoned, strong hands but where is your fire. This is not a stage in SOB's in NYC or Queens hall. Get with the program. You cannot change the mood of panorama music to suit yourself. Holman did this sort of thing but at least he wrote great fiery kaiso music popular up to this day. Where are you going with this.you simply have to yield to the spirit of carnival...you got all that great music in you . Put some fire to it or this great sounding orchestra must think about making changes if they want to win a competition
A fan of pan music from childhood - not a musician just a person who appreciates the art form. For me this piece of music was melodic, filled with beautiful chords. Great arrangement but no 'panorama excitement' Although I felt the music I did not feel the 'spirit of carnival deep in my soul/bones/body - isn't that what panorama is all about? As mentioned in other comments here I totally agree with the concept of a different type of steelband competition during the year to showcase this type of fantastic music
I am now convinced that we need another steelband competition, where we feature Pan-Jazz, or other genres. It would be great. In this Narell/Birdsong could probably give our panjazzmen Holman and Boogsie a real run for their money sometimes.
Interestingly, when I close my eyes as I listen I feel I am hearing a marvellous piece of orchestral latin-jazz played by a great steelband.
Its a pity his scores may not reflect the level of musical ideas in the piece as he will fall short on 'spirit of Carnival' or whatever the category is that makes a band a Panorama contender.
And Panorama MUST remain Panorama! Or we lose an important cultural artefact and the stepping stone to the revitalisation of Carnival.

Great, great tune.
