Thanks for this documentary showing the rich cultural diversity in Aruba and how steel band has played its part in this history. Since I have never been to Aruba, listening to papimento was really fun, too. Thanks again.
The story of the steeldrum's introduction to other Caribbean islands emphasizes the similar roots of the diverse Caribbean people, so it's no wonder that native peoples of the different islands almost instinctively adopted the pan as their own.
The African based rhythms of the Southern Caribbean Islands made it easy for the pan to be adopted to local music styles, and similar social structures guaranteed the assimilation the humble steel drum into local cultures. This appears to have been the case in Aruba, an Island that was certainly loved by Trinidadians who visited there
.I knew many young men who went to Aruba to work in the Oil Refinery in the sixties. They made a lot of money but had so much fun that some of them came home broke!
