UWI Panoridim is a 23-piece orchestra with an aim to broaden the reach and scope of steelpan music. The band is a non-profit cultural society of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica, under auspices of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA). Panoridim is the oldest steelband in the country and consists mostly of Jamaicans blended with a few other Caribbean islanders from Trinidad & Tobago, St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Barbados. The band has assisted with the formation and leadership of many other professional, church, and school bands throughout the island. As a club under the University of the West Indies, we teach steelpan technique and performance to all our members. Many of our pannists are now some of the best steelpan players in Jamaica and are prominent steelpan music arrangers, directors and composers. With a mission to foster a wider appreciation of the instrument, we are dedicated to high quality live performances. Our repertoire takes you beyond the stigma of soca, and covers an array of genres including reggae, latin, pop, classical, folk and jazz. The Orchestra has performed at major local events, and has competed and medalled in the World Steelband Festivals in Trinidad. We also host our own concert seasons during the summer [Panfest] and occasionally at Christmas. Currently, we are the largest single steel orchestra in the island, but are dynamic enough to perform in smaller configurations to suit any event.

  • Before the current incarnation of Panoridim, there was time when the campus steelband consisted of Trinidadians, plus 1 Jamaican, 2 Antiguans, 1 St. Lucian  and 1 Dominican.  And with the change its demographic makeup came a change also in its sound and its objectives.
